August 2, 2013 at 6:09 pm in reply to: Audio keyframing over waveform view in Source panel?Nope, sorry. Expand your audio track as large as you like and keyframe there. The program monitor does not display audio, only the source monitor.
[elise london] ” the Effects panel of the source monitor.”
Each panel is independent, the effects panel relates to the selected item in your timeline not your source item. The layout is just stacked to optimize space.

Visually? No. I usually just check by plugging my headphones into a stereo male/mono female adapter plug. If you hear a huge drop in volume with something then you have a problem.

Panning the audio is killing one of the two channels but then you have dialog living in one ear, unless the guy gave you additional instructions.
Doing a “fill left” duplicates one channel to the other so you have two in phase channels instead of channels that are out of phase and canceling each other.

[James T'seleie] “What is the ideal output format to use to maintain video quality with 1080p 60fps MTS files?”
The question is moot unless we know what you’re trying to deliver to. I assume, based on your preset, websites like YouTube.
Presets are just that, I would treat them as a base for your export that may need some customization.
I would also assume you’re using the 29.97fps export which may lead to the jitter you feel in your pans. Solution: Select frame blending during export or match your export framerate to your project, in this case 59.94.
Bitrate usually needs to be increased to account for another round of conversion by YouTube and Vimeo. I usually like to increase the preset values by 50%, in your case if you stick with 59.94 you may need to increase your bitrate by 150-200%. I also like setting the keyframe value to half that of the frame rate. I feel like these adjustments cater to more real-world exports; the presets are VERY conservative.

I would assume your dialog track is stereo? Basically the same track on the left and right? Add the effect fill right or fill left to all your dialog edits.
What you’re coming across is a phase issue where each channel of the dialog cancels each other out when things are mixed down to mono (like your iPhone). This is usually an issue with the way the sound was recorded, like an improperly wired XLR mic cable.
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/936889 was a thread that goes through a similar issue.

Hello all,
To clarify, it was one of the Briese parabolics. The director had forced the use of the largest model (the 220) on me for a music video and I wasn’t particularly thrilled with the lack of flexibility with the light. On this job he wanted to use the 77 or 100cm model. Speaking to John’s comment, I’m in LA and while they are rare, they’re not impossible to find in almost every size offered.
On this particular shoot we’ve decided on a Broncolor 77cm parabolic plus a bare bulb Joker 1600. The director owns the Broncolor (he’s a photographer by trade which makes working with him always a bit of a pain but I love the guy) and we’re getting a custom mount made for the Joker.
We did a lighting test at our rental house and he was satisfied with the level of similarity.

The 70-200 + Canon’s 1.4x adapter is a good place to start. The 300 prime isn’t bad to have on-hand either. They’ll both tripod/monopod mount to the lens via a collar and have active stabilization.

July 31, 2013 at 5:39 pm in reply to: Any kind of program to match audio clips based on spectral analysis or something similar? So a stringout against what is, basically, a finished cut?
You could try chopping up the finished cut line by line and then in PluralEyes doing a non-chonological sync (at least that’s what v2 calls it) to see what takes you used.
Unless you have hours of VO to go through, it may be an hour or two better well spent just to match by ear – trying to be too clever with solutions may waste more time than if you were to do the grunt work.

1) Concerning Quicktime’s 32-bit nature – that shouldn’t really be a performance issue for a 1080 sized frame. While ProRes is capable of larger sizes, Avid DNxHD is not.
As far as the gamma issue, I’ve not seen it within files encoded by Premiere or Redcine; color fidelity was maintained throughout the workflow. The only notable exception for me during testing seemed to be exporting the Animation codec from Redcine-X.
2) Avid MXF files will work just as easy in After Effects CC – although if you’re going to online (relink the originals) your edit, then why bother with the smaller MXF files while in visual effects?
If this is just for offline files, unless you’re collaborating with other editors, the MXF files should never really leave your realm.
Avid DNxHD is a SMPTE standard codec, and MXF is SMPTE standard container. Anything Apple is not. That may be another selling point for you if you don’t have to conform with anyone elses workflow
