Mobile Audio Dialog problem needs help
Posted by Dave Donaldson on August 2, 2013 at 1:23 amI had a problem recently. Here is a link to the project I just did. Coming out of the desktop or laptop, no problem. Coming out of my ipad, no problem. Coming out through my iPhone 4S it only plays the sound fx and music BUT NO DIALOG! But if I put in earbuds I can hear everything. The volume is pretty low and I understand that. But I’d like to troubleshoot this In case it happens again to me or anybody. Here’s the link. Watch from the desktop first, then watch from a phone.

August 2, 2013 at 4:39 amI would assume your dialog track is stereo? Basically the same track on the left and right? Add the effect fill right or fill left to all your dialog edits.
What you’re coming across is a phase issue where each channel of the dialog cancels each other out when things are mixed down to mono (like your iPhone). This is usually an issue with the way the sound was recorded, like an improperly wired XLR mic cable.
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/936889 was a thread that goes through a similar issue.

August 2, 2013 at 4:53 amOic. Yea I’m using a tascam dr-40 and I’ve had issues with it as of late. Never really been an audio guy. So I’d say an improper XLR cable could be an issue. Another guy in another forum I posted said to pan the audio. Am I basically doing the same thing by adding a fill to one side or the other?

August 2, 2013 at 5:05 amPanning the audio is killing one of the two channels but then you have dialog living in one ear, unless the guy gave you additional instructions.
Doing a “fill left” duplicates one channel to the other so you have two in phase channels instead of channels that are out of phase and canceling each other.

August 2, 2013 at 5:14 amOh ok. I see what your saying. I appreciate it man. I will try that when I get back to the chair. Is there a way to visually check for that in post? I guess I’m just adding a checklist for future reference.

August 2, 2013 at 5:30 amVisually? No. I usually just check by plugging my headphones into a stereo male/mono female adapter plug. If you hear a huge drop in volume with something then you have a problem.
