Right click the clip in timeline > select “Audio Channels” and make sure that the stereo tracks aren’t assigned to “none”. There is some bug with Premiere – I’ve had this happen a few times for reasons unknown.

October 16, 2013 at 7:23 pm in reply to: Lighting a slow-mo macro shoot with Red Epic – HMI or tungsten?I’d be careful about dimming. I’ve had “flicker free” dimmable LEDs show heavy flicker between 0-50%; some more than others including Arri and Mole Richardson. I would rely on using them at 100% and then using scrims/nets or ND gel.

October 16, 2013 at 5:08 pm in reply to: How to get Boris Transitions to work in CS5?I don’t think may effects in the market are used as native transitions (I think Boris’s makeshift AE replacement called Boris RED can do it).
Generally you apply the transition to both clips, put clip 1 above clip 2 and overlap where they join slightly, then you keyframe the effect amount from 0 to 100 on the entering clip and 100 on the exiting clip.

Premiere Pro CC files are gziped text files. If they are corrupted then it’s far less likely that you’ll be able to salvage them than when it was plain text.
I would call it a wash unfortunately. You could try renaming it as a zip file and using something like 7-Zip to see if you can crack it open.
In the future I suggest using dropbox and saving your project files to your dropbox folder. For free accounts I believe Dropbox will keep a few “previous copies” of the same file for up to 7 days (don’t quote me, read the fine print). This would allow you to restore a file that would usually be overwritten by a new save.

October 15, 2013 at 5:09 am in reply to: Lighting a slow-mo macro shoot with Red Epic – HMI or tungsten?Well if you have a high speed solid state ballast then I say HMI is viable – many rental houses don’t usually have them available. I always feel like their performance isn’t perfect so I always expect a little residual flicker but maybe I’m crazy.
Also, rereading your initial post I didn’t realize you wanted to go deep with your aperture. 300fps @ f/16 would be an EV value of 17.
A little back of the envelope calculation with an Arri 2.5k at full spot at 10 ft (3.3m) is 4213 footcandles.
pCam states that for proper exposure for 300fps, f/16, iso 800, is 3000 footcandles. The 2.5k would be more than enough (at least this particular model).
Again, if you’re working with the lighting much closer then you can go with lower wattage. Just keep the inverse square law in mind; you can gain 4 stops just from moving lights in from 10ft to 2.5ft.

Read this if you have the 650M gpu with at least a gig of RAM (no luck if you’re like me and have the 512mb model) https://blogs.adobe.com/kevinmonahan/2013/09/13/enabling-cuda-for-the-mercury-playback-engine-in-the-macbook-pro-retina/
You might have near the same model of MBP that I do, and I have the nVidia 650M GPU (some don’t and will have integrated graphics).
Open up your activity monitor and check it out while doing playback. I would make sure that you’re not pegging hard drive activity.
If the bottleneck isn’t disk speed, and I don’t think it is if it’s just one layer of video, then I bet it’s mostly the interlacing on the fly. This is where mercury hardware comes in handy.
In terms of your motion graphics, try ProRes4444, but as soon as Premiere hits another layer it usually clunks for me on my laptop as well if I don’t render.
Honestly, if you are having issues, I would take 1 or 2 overnights and convert your video to ProRes at 59.94 and work with them as an intermediate codec – at least you also get the benefit of smart rendering in the timeline as well https://blogs.adobe.com/kevinmonahan/2012/10/11/smart-rendering-in-premiere-pro-cs6-6-0-1-and-later/

October 15, 2013 at 4:11 am in reply to: Exporting Clips From Timeline While Maintaining Source MetaDataDo it in After Effects.
1. Import item(s) into AE.
2. Drag clip onto New Composition Icon
3. Add warp stabilizerThe default action is to assign the comp’s start timecode to that of the clip – something that Premiere Pro doesn’t do.
Alternately, you’d just need to do the same in Premiere and then manually set the timeline’s start time.
After Effects will have more automation support. If you’re doing a few clips I would just use Premiere as the previews will quicker.

October 15, 2013 at 3:36 am in reply to: Lighting a slow-mo macro shoot with Red Epic – HMI or tungsten?1. pCAM (it’s an app for the iphone). Lights will have lumen/footcandle ratings for certain distances and focus spreads. pCAM has all the calculators to determine lighting needs from there.
2. I would go tungsten. You won’t get flicker free operation at 300fps from HMI lighting. Because tungsten bulbs use actual heated filaments, you get a consistent light which aren’t susceptible to flicker nearly as much.
3. I would consider a tweenie light (650w equivalents), and some dedolights (200w usually). This issue isn’t so much the amount of light as you can position lights quite closely in a macro situation, but you’ll need smaller sources like the dedolights and a lot of cutters/barn doors/cinefoil to shape the light in any meaningful way.

In Premiere and After Effects, this would be impossible with various methods. I suggest using Adobe Media Encoder and setting up a watch folder on your hard drive. Anything put in the watch folder would be converted to the output format of your choice.
