Answer: i discovered the issue after a protracted process of trial and error. It’s the AdobeRGB v sRGB debate (which i was unaware of till now)

In my case, if I imported stills with an AdobeRGB colour profile they look washed out, with reduced reds and skin tones looking dull. If i then processed them with a sRGB profile they looked the same.

This is a simplified explanation of a complex issue. You can do the research but i thought this fix may help other people and save them days of hair tearing 🙂

Please can you provide more info? Are you suggesting that Looks has a built in adjustable pre-set? If so, what is it called.

    Thanks for your help

And I just found out that apparently Playback Pro is NOT the only thing out there. I just discovered some software called QLab which looks perfect for my needs. Flexible, in the sense that it can be as simple or as complex as you need. Modular, in the sense that you only have to buy into what you need and not pay for a bunch of stuff that you’ll never use. And on top of this an intelligent finance system whereby you can purchase different versions, only buying what you need AND you can rent licenses for pro versions with added functionality on a daily basis ($3 – $7 per day). So if, like me, you’ll only be using it for a couple of shows then its a more sensible option. Best of all for me, it looks like the demo version will cost me nothing and do what i need!
No, i’m not a sales person for QLab, just seriously impressed with an intelligently designed bit of software with a reasonable pricing system. Just can’t believe that it was so hard to find and hope this info is useful to someone else searching for the above.

    Thanks for the advice Steve.
I’m not too sure what you mean by ‘all others are just playback’ as simple playback is all i thought I needed. I just don’t want the QT controls to appear all over the screen any time i go near the machine… Will Digital Heaven Prop Player give me this functionality maybe? (Combined with some kind of hardware vision mixer so i could fade stuff out if necessary?)
Is the other stuff you mention there hardware or software based?
    Thanks for the leads!

Do you know if there is anything like this for FCP 7 ? I’ve had a look around but not found anything so far. Thanks.

PS. Even if i change the sequence setting to DV Firewire Basic, when i hit Print to Video, it auto goes into ‘Transcoding to HDV’routine.

Hi Raphael. Thanks for reply but im afraid i don’t understand this.
    1. Why does it need to be DV? The camera is HDV (and i would have assumed accepted an HDV signal?)
    2. Why is FCE not warning me of this and behaving as if everything is OK? Why does it auto-transcode my timeline to HDV when i hit print to video if this is no good to me?
    3. What do I do to rectify whatever the problem is? I cant seem to find a simple FCE tutorial to explain how to print to video? (There is NO edit to tape function in FCE as there is in FCP.)
4.Do i have to change sequence in ‘easy set-up’to DV Firewire Basic perhaps? Is this what you mean?
    Thanks for help (anyone!)

I have exactly the same problem, only my footage 25fps and video camera a Canon XHA1.
Does anyone out there have any idea what’s going on? (Printing to video in imovie used to be real simple 😉
    Thanks
