In response to another of David Battistella’s “requests” and in homage to one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year, I have made this Beta version of a Super 8 effect.

    2614_super8framed.zip

There is a Super 8 filter in FCPX already but it’s lacking some finesse, especially in terms of a correct aspect ratio frame and the like.

This new one has Controls for Exposure, Saturation, Softness, Jitter, Scratches, Film Dirt, Grain, Pan & Scan, and more.

Hope you get some fun out of it – and as always let me know if there are things you would like added or changed.

    Nice one!

I was working on a similar effect, now mine just feels like a pale imitation of yours 🙂

Just dropped this into my favorites folder, very cool effect!

I could use a custom filter to put on still photos for a look that I often have to create manually. I have no idea how difficult it would be to create in Motion, I’d be happy to pay someone for throwing it together. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Here is a clip that shows the effect: https://vimeo.com/ethanedit/panels

Here is how I create it manually in FCPX:

    Hi Ethan

Looks like that would be pretty easy to do – assuming you have some set timings which it looks as though you do. Do you want to email me so we don’t take up the forum with this?

Here’s a rough preset that I think is close to the concept you want

FCP X BG You’re on the Panel

FCP X custom effect to have a still or video reveal panel by panel. Transition off in reverse order

There are controls to adjust the scale and width of each mask.

The animation is set for each panel to animate in over 10 frames with a couple of frames overlap.

You can trim the effect to be as long as you need and the transition on and off will always be the same length if you leave the animate on / animate off boxes ticked in the parameters.

Depending on the size of the still images you have you may have to play around with the mask size and position of each panel to get the desired look.

Let me now if you want any adjusted timings done.

Extract to a folder of your choosing inside /user name / movies / motion templates / Effects
(e.g extract to a new folder called “Custom Effects”)

    Cheers,

    Brendan

Thanks Brandon, I think it’s good to cross-pollinate on the forums, good way to solve problems. As usual your design is outstanding, I’m going to play around with this filter. (ie, there goes my Saturday night!)

I love that you can scale the entire image and it retains all of the filter effects, this is going to save so much time. The timings are perfect on the fades. A sister filter with a slower reveal time may be handy as well.

Also, I don’t know if it’s possible with the masks, but something that could really be useful is the ability to quickly place each gap where you want it to be (between people, objects) and have it retain its size, so all the gaps were always uniform. However, the controls you have now do the job fine with a bit of eyeballing.

I wonder if there is a way to assign the position of the right side of panel A and the left side of panel B in one control… These are definitely mathematics I am not qualified to contemplate!….on that note, can you set the original gap width a tiny bit smaller?

I really appreciate you and Simon for being so innovative and willing to share your talents. You guys are putting out some really good stuff.

Ethan – that’s the way I would do it. Did an entire sequence years ago in AE. I had different sized boxes all moving with keyframes to form the final image.

A plug-in would be nice if it had enough controls for customization.

Silly question – where do you put plugs/filters/effects in FCP X

Here’s a slower version of the panel effect. Twice as long reveals as originals. (20 frames)

FCP X BG You’re on the Panel (slower)

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,

    Brendan
