[Aindreas Gallagher] “Its not FCP7, you’re not whacking from bins into viewer, then reviewing and dragging or stamping into timeline – the three step is collapsed – I’m still a trollish toe dipper with FCPX, but that seriously aside how do you find your approach to the timeline altering?”
I thought I would answer this too although I don’t know if it’s much different than Simon’s. On Avid and FCP7, I always edited from the viewer. Meaning I chose my shots and in/out carefully there, and then assembled in the timeline. Timeline editing was minimal (aside from audio). FCPX makes editing in the viewer difficult and frustrating and was the single biggest adjustment I had to make. That said, editing in the timeline feels very natural and quick. If they develop those aspects more (two-up display for keyboard trimming, lasso multiple edit points for synchronized trimming), it’ll feel even more second-nature.

[oliver peters] It’s been said a number of times by a number of folks, but would we be trying so hard to make FCP X work for everything, if Apple had, in fact, named it “iMovie Pro”?
I seriously doubt it. Because if we’re just talking about a name change, it still wouldn’t keep people from resenting why apple chose to develop this program instead of updating FCP7. That anger would carry over no matter what.
Secondly, I think people try to make it work, because they want it to work for them. When I first layed hands on an Avid, it was a Newscutter 1.5 I think, I tried to make it do what it couldn’t at the time. Back then you only had 3 or 4 video tracks available and I wanted to composite over 15 in this scene I was cutting. My workaround was ridiculous, but that didn’t stop me because I wanted to edit the story a particular way.
I see FCPX the same way. I want to edit stories based on my own sense of creativity, not on the limitations of the software. I push to discover the flaws and report them because, like Avid, I hope that the developer is listening and will make the program better. Secretly, I feel all developers hope that as well; that their users will tell them how they can make their software better.
Of course there’s also the fact that FCPX is really new and people are still just discovering ways to use it. FCPX may not be useful for all workflows yet, but I have no reason to believe that will always be the case. In all likelihood it will end up like FCP7, possible to use for almost any workflow, but ideal for only some.

The audio could be skipping if your computer is underpowered to handle the different formats all at the same time. Try using proxy mode.

Your group is probably set as a 3D group. You can’t crop or mask 3D groups. Well, you can apply an image mask to a 3D group, but the mask itself will be 2D.
If you NEED the group to be 3D, then place the group inside another 3D group and make the group with the title 2D so you can use crop or mask.

[Craig Seeman] “Given what they did with the Angle Viewer, I don’t think it would be too far fetched to see a “Gang” feature since that’s needed and I can’t see another way around that.”
Exactly my point. The specialized use of a second monitor, but not one that sits there all the time. Gang can be useful, although Simon is correct in that not many editors require that functionality.
I’d be more interested in a 3-up monitor for color correction.

I suspect any “second” monitor like the angle viewer will be only for specialized tasks and not as a basic clip viewer.
Regarding 2: Roles based mixing tool. The ability to double click a clip and show all independent audio channels (similar to Avid’s “step in”), edit them independently and then collapse back to original clip view.
My list (in addition to your fine suggestions):
Fix Open in Timeline so that when done from the project, clip opens to the matched frame point.
Fix Loop Playback so that if you’re adjusting an audio or video effect the playback continues to loop even when making adjustments.
Be able to hold a key down when slipping a clip that prevents a connected clip from moving as well.
Shortcut key for trim window access so keyboard trims are easier.
Ability to “collapse” multiclip so that audio can be broken away and video can be slipped without affecting audio.
Windows layouts that can be saved. And have FCPX remember layout when angle viewer or scopes windows are active.
User-defined criteria for search/smart collection. Ability to add any metadata category to search.
Definable “Work Area” (like AE) where portions of a timeline can be exported.

Fill that out as a feature request and send it to them with the feedback option. I do that all the time.

Personally, I wish Launch Pad would allow me to select and activate an app with the keyboard instead of having to click on it.

True, but the OP said it was a cuts only sequence which means no rendering was presumably necessary.
