  • Copying Single Effects

Posted by Brent Cook on February 3, 2012 at 4:39 pm

There are a couple of threads on this with no definitive answer to this question. This may mean it’s not possible in FCPX, but since there is no definite “yes, it’s possible” or “no, it’s impossible”, I’m presenting it again. I needed this the other day and was unable to do it.

I’m aware of the cmd-opt-v command to paste effects, but I need to be able to copy the parameters of a single effect from a source clip to my destination clip while (this is key) keeping all the effects on the destination clip in tact. While I’m fairly new to video editing, I’m surprised that this functionality isn’t there. The past effects command copies ALL of the effect from one clip to another replacing all the effects on the destination clip.

Below are the threads where this is mentioned. There are posts claiming a method for copying single effects, but it doesn’t work. They copy/replace all the effects from one clip to another, but if certain effects are turned off in the source clip, they still appear in the destination clip…just turned off.

What you’re specifically asking for is not possible in FCPX. I hope they implement a version of the paste attributes dialogue from FCP7 at some point, but for now, all we have is what you know.

However, if you need to copy a single specific effect onto several clips, there are ways to do that quickly. What specific effect are you trying to manage?

Thanks for shedding some definitive light. At least now I can stop trying to figure out how to do it.

The other day I had 3 different clips made up of the same still image. Each clip had a different animated transform to pan/zoom for emphasizing 3 different areas of the photo. After creating the animation I had to perform the same color correction to each clip. I should have done color first and copied it to the other clips, but I didn’t.

Another example: I wanted to copy a vignette to multiple clips that have different color correction on them. It was a manual vignette using a second color correction with shape mask.

Well, your first problem can be solved by creating a preset for the color correction. Do the color to the first clip, and then at the bottom of any of the color windows is a gear. Click on it and save the preset. Then select your next clip and apply the preset.

Unfortunately, the presets can only be applied one at a time. Which is why if you’re applying it to lots of clips, like your second example, I might be more inclined to create a vignette title effect in Motion and apply it as a connected clip over all the clips you need, kind of like an adjustment layer.

With the colour correction at least you can save a set up to a preset.

Its easy enough (all though not as quick) to then go into each clip and recall that set up in the colour board.

I believe with Color Correction you can still copy it to clips ahead or behind it. It’s buried in the keyboard Command modifications but I believe, at least with color correction, you can use those commands to copy to a clip before or after much like FCP7 did.

this is one of the big let downs in the software

I think it will be very good when they properly implement something like aperture does, until then its not fit for purpose when copy paste effects

it re-writes the crop and other FX as well as colour corrections making it really not useful

    How about this.

    Select all the clips

    Make compound clip

Place the vignette on the compound clip.

It would be useful to drag the effect present in the inspector window on the clip that you want to apply it

Thanks, all, for the tips. These will come in handy.

Frank, I agree. That would be great.

Fill that out as a feature request and send it to them with the feedback option. I do that all the time.
