Can you explain exactly what you did? I tried following Bret’s steps, but I must be missing a step in there somewhere because I don’t really get any outline at the end.

I was working on my own solution after I realized I misinterpreted what you were doing. I remember a solution that Mark Spencer came up with using the Min Max filter and creating two clones. The problem I had was that the bounding box for the clone was limited to the bounding box for the text layer so to fix that, I had to put the text layer in a group, fix the resolution of the group and then clone the group.

    Here’s what it looked like:

As I said, I’m curious about this other method that I couldn’t get to work. What were the specific steps you went through to get it working?

Thank goodness they fixed the audio meters. I know it’s a small thing, but that bug was driving me up the wall.

You do this by turning off the Text layer’s face color. This will update the clone.

    Hope this helps.

I understand your issue. It’s not elegant enough for my taste either. I’d suggest sending feedback. I know for a fact they pay attention to the feedback they get there.

As far as your specific issue, I would do things slightly different. I sort by favorites with broll and other takes where I like to see just what I’ve chosen. But with INTV bites, I don’t sort by favorites although I do create favorites for each answer. If you don’t sort by favorites, you can isolate your INTV clip by keyword so you only have one clip in the browser. Twirl open the clip and all your favorites will be listed one after another.

You can use the arrow key to jump from bite to bite and selecting the favorite creates a range for it. Hopefully that will speed you up a bit.

  • Could you post a “finished animation” of what you accomplished in Premiere? In a few places I’m not quite sure I understand how the animation is supposed to look so explaining how it’s done in FCPX might not yield the correct results, or might not illustrate the problem you were having.

I’d also like to see a visual example of this problem:

[Michael Paul] “(imagine the picture is 800 x 800 pixels, you have a 800 x 800 pixels framing/box around it. If you rotate it on any axis and it moves outside of that bounding box it will get cut there like a mask)”

Regarding what I CAN answer, it sounds like most of what you wanted to do can be accomplished inside FCPX. Keep in mind that Motion was designed to essentially be a ‘plug-in’ maker for FCPX, giving you the ability to do advance animation and such by creating templates which can be manipulated in FCPX. So, for some animations that could be created fairly easily in Premiere with it’s 3D effect, might require some knowledge of Motion to pull off exactly. Or at least a plugin leveraging Motion.

The bug issue you’re having is based on the FCPX assumption that when you drop footage into your timeline as a connected clip, you want to be able to see it. Therefore, it shows up above any connected clips that are currently there. FCPX doesn’t know that the bug is transparent and not affecting the view of clips beneath it. You have two options to get the result you want:

    1) drag clips from the browser into the timeline instead of using the connected clip shortcut (Q). By dragging, you can bypass the natural tendency to put connected clips above.

    2) Assign a role for your bug. Then use the new roles-based lanes to keep the bug at the top while you add new footage into the timeline.

[Michael Paul] “First of all there is no ease in or ease out or any kind of keyframe interpolation inside FPCX.”

There are ease in and ease out controls. Set your position keyframes and then hit SHIFT+T to activate the transform tool. this will show you the path of your animation and the keyframes directly in the canvas. Click on a keyframe and you’ll see the bezier handles allowing you to add curves and easing to your animation. Play with the distance of the handles from the keyframe to adjust velocity of easing.

[Michael Paul] “The directional blur in FCPX is very weak. I just want to see stripes going in one direction for a moment. FCPX’s amount 32 isn’t enough”

This is one of those things about FCPX that can be confusing if you’re not familiar with it. The slider for the directional blur only goes up to 32, but if you click and drag in the value instead, you can adjust it to whatever works for you.

For the animation questions, I could use some more info on how it’s supposed to look.

  • [brianlaz] “I don’t feel too bad now because it seems that only after watching every tutorial and reading the entire manual would I find that no, you cannot set an in and out point and delete in your timeline, and have it affect all “tracks” (is there another term in FCPX land for tracks? I have the original camera audio on one “blank”, and my zoom audio on another “blank”).
I can certainly empathize with frustration from legacy users because for both things I mentioned, the answers seem to be workarounds rather than another sensical way of achieving the operation.”

They’re not workarounds. They are a fundamentally different way of approaching problems. The reason some Legacy folks have issues with X has to do with them approaching a situation the same as they would in 7 or Avid or the other track based NLEs.

Sure, if you’re synching clips in the timeline instead of creating sync clips or multiclips, then yes, you need to use blade all to cut through all the clips at a given point in the timeline and select all before ripple deleting. Seems like a waste of time and a workaround. Except, that if you’d approached the problem at FCPX’s strengths, you could have trimmed and synced video/audio clips in your browser and you’d be editing by now.

Conversely, if you are cutting a picture and you have overlapping audio that you don’t want to delete when you lose a section, it becomes a one-click event in FCPX and a “workaround” in every other NLE. It’s all a matter of perspective. FCPX is much different in how it handles certain functions and it’s efficient if you use it to it’s strengths, but it can be tedious if you don’t. Same with every other NLE.

I would suggest taking some time and learning what FCPX can do, and then approach your edit again and see if things don’t go a little better for you.

June 22, 2016 at 11:28 pm in reply to: red box

[Jim Schatz] “what the red box is in my browser window and how to get rid of it”

It’s an indicator that you’re zoomed in on your display viewer and you’re not seeing the whole frame. If you click and drag inside that box, you can view all parts of the frame. It’s used for blowing up the video and still being able to view any part of the frame.

You can get rid of it, by fitting the frame to window (SHIFT+Z with the display selected). You can also choose fit from the display settings in the upper corner.

Good idea. Using roles to manage mixes and things like that is a great idea. It’s very helpful when versioning. Especially if you have a 5.1, stereo and mono mixes.

[Peter Wood] “All I need to do (and I’ve done it before, I just can’t remember at the moment) is to select and disable all “audio” except one new audio track which is a mastered version of the audio for the whole video.”

Your situation is actually much easier. Just select everything in the timeline (CMD+A) and CMD + deselect the master track. Then, open the inspector and uncheck the audio in the Channel Configuration. This will disable all the audio, even for merged video/audio clips, without affecting video.
