No, you could always put the image in a compound (OPT+G), mask the compound and adjust the image size inside the compound. It’s just not as elegant because you have to step into the compound to adjust the image which means not being able to see the mask while you do it.
In fact, you can also add a clip of black from the generators browser above your source clip and add the mask to that. You’ll have to invert the mask to get the effect, but that’ll also work. Not as easy as an adjustment layer, but it should work.

Do you have Motion? Create an adjustment layer effect.
In Motion start a new Title project, delete the title and save it in a custom category. Then in FCP, put your picture in the timeline. Add the adjustment layer as a title above your clip. Add the mask effect to the adjustment layer. Now you have a picture in the primary that you can size and adjust independent of the mask on the adjustment layer.

Welcome to FCPX.
1) The typical workflow I’d follow is putting the music in the primary storyline. Then you add the video elements as connected clips. You can do this in sections by grouping a number of clips into secondary storylines which allow you to swap shots and make changes pretty quickly while still keeping a particular sections attached to a particular section of music.
2) You can assign keyboard shortcuts how you like in the keyboard editor (CMD+OPT+K).
3) Nope. Markers are designed to be pretty hard to move. You can always file a feature request in Provide Feedback in the Final Cut Pro menu.
4) Yes, you have to remove the favorite and re-favorite a smaller section. But this is quite easy. You can click on the green favorite bar in the browser or select the favorite icon beneath the clip in the browser and hit U to unfavorite the area. But you’ll already have an IN and OUT selected so you just have to adjust one side or the other and hit F to re-favorite.
5) Here’s what I do. Others might have different tactics. I use favorites to log bites. First thing I do is set up the browser columns so that Notes is the second field after name. Select a clip and watch it down. Select a range for a bite and hit F to favorite. I’ll mark favorites all the way through the interview. Then go back and twirl open the clip to see all the favorites. Select the first favorite. Hit play. Hit enter and you’ll be able to “name” the favorite which I use to type the first few words of the bite (while it’s playing). Then I hit tab to get to the Notes column and I type the last few words of the bite (or else a general note about what’s being talked about). You can add your asterisk here if you like. Best thing about this is I don’t even have to stop playback. And if you have looping on, it’ll loop the favorite until you’ve had a chance to label it. Then just hit the down arrow key to jump to the next favorite and go again. I can log an entire interview really quickly this way.
Hope this helps,
Andy

February 16, 2017 at 6:48 pm in reply to: Export After Effects Titles as Final Cut Pro Title template?[Duke Senter] “My workplace purchased 125 After Effects titles as one .aep file.
“That’s unfortunate. Why to workplaces not think to talk to end users when they do this sort of thing. Titles and their integration with FCPX is one of the things that Motion does REALLY well.
I would explain to them that Motion templates are a much better investment, particularly if you have any Motion skills because it makes individualizing the template easier and ensuring that your business isn’t using the same templates as a bunch of other businesses.

You can clearly see the cut if you go frame by frame during the zoom. On a You Tube video, pause just before the zoom at 17 sec and use the period ( . ) key to step through frame by frame (btw, the comma ( , ) will go back frame by frame too).
The zoom begins on the outgoing clip while it’s still moving, but once the position of the girls arms are more or less the same as the incoming clip, he freezes the shot while continuing the zoom. Then as soon as the zoom finishes he hard cuts to the new shot. He made sure when zooming in that the relative position of the girl in the center was the same as the incoming shot to hide the cut. But if you go back and forth at the edit point, you’ll see clearly how she’s not exactly in the same position and the image is terribly blown up and pixelated. But it happens so fast at real time that your eye doesn’t catch it.
To do this, you only need the basic keyframing inside FCP. There’s a caveat though. If you want a bezier timed zoom, you need to use the ken burns effect or else build the appropriate Effect in Motion because FCP keyframing doesn’t let you smooth keyframes on the scale parameter. This also means that if you’re keyframing position as well as scale (which is likely) you’ll need to view the keyframes in the viewer, rt click and choose linear from the menu otherwise you’ll have default smoothing applied to only the position keyframes which looks jerky if you’re scaling the image up too.
To create the freeze you can just use the blade speed command on the outgoing shot and change the speed to 0% for the hold frames. You can apply the zoom blur to the incoming shot and keyframe that as well if you want to fake a camera blur.

January 26, 2017 at 5:21 pm in reply to: Replace with Gap Multicam – FCPX 10.3.2 (Not possible)[Mike Fitzsimmons] “Hey… If I’m understanding the issue correctly, In/Out + FORWARD DELETE (or SHIFT DELETE) will leave the gap.
“I’ve tried this Mike. It doesn’t work. I think this is because gap footage is a construct that can be selected (and added to a timeline via the replace with gap shortcut), but there is no “gap” footage in a multiclip. This seems to be a change from the previous version and I’m not really sure the point of it.

January 25, 2017 at 7:10 pm in reply to: Replace with Gap Multicam – FCPX 10.3.2 (Not possible)I was able to confirm your problem. I hadn’t used that feature before so I didn’t realize it’d been changed. I think you use the feedback menu to explain that both ripple and replace with gap should be possible in multicam.
However, as a workaround, you can blade sections, select and delete. this will leave a gap in the multiclip. Also, the roll tool works so you can peel back clip edges and leave a gap as well.

Got it. I read Bret’s comment as using the Glow effect, not Outer Glow. That’s what I was doing wrong. Working for me that was as well.
