Motion is fantastic with it’s integration with FCPX as far as creating filters, transitions and motion graphic elements. If you’re doing things like what you linked to, I would most definitely get Motion. In my opinion, it’s better than After Effects for that kind of pure motion graphics work.

If you’re doing photo-realistic compositing, VFX or something like that, After Effects is a much stronger tool. There are plenty of things that After Effects can accomplish faster, better, and easier than Motion.

Personally, I’d get Motion, and then see if your workflow requires After Effects. Or just purchase a license when you need a license for AE.

man, I like prince and all, but something is fully screwy with the Creative Cow notifications. I’ve gotten no less than 12 email notifications of this article and thread.

I used to have a pretty good solution with My AJA Kona Lhi, but in the newer versions of FCPX (10.2) and OSX, I’ve lost external monitoring completely. I’m not sure what people use these days.

    [David Mathis] “Something like this?

I do what Jeremy’s suggesting actually and it’s simpler than XML templates. Those are fine if you don’t have media you want to move from place to place, or if you have everything on a single shared drive.

For me, I have a template library that has folders, smart collections, and some keywords that I always use. It also has a music library (specific to these projects) and some graphics and show opens that are also specific. I built the library, imported the music, gfx and show opens with the library set to store imported items into the library itself. Then I changed the media setting to a folder that could be accessed by multiple libraries and closed it out.

Now, when I start a new project with this team, I duplicate the library at the finder level, rename it and open it and everything is ready to go.

Yes! I have that too. Minor annoyance, but still an annoyance.

[David Mathis] “It could mean someone changed colors or the Role name. I love it when Apple is so vague about a new feature.

I thought it was meant as an indicator that the media in the browser associated with the clip has a different role assigned to it (since it’s possible to change the role in the timeline without changing the role in the master clip).

[James Cude] “What kind of weirdness?”

Mostly glitchy behavior and some crashing. One thing that I’ve been noticing fairly often is when I have one project open and I then open another project from another library, then go back to my original project, the visual display in the project window changes to the chicklet view.

I’ve been seeing issues where if I place a dissolve between two pieces of audio with different levels, the dissolve doesn’t always smooth the audio cut. It doesn’t remember window positions. If I have the angle viewer and inspector open at the same time while adjusting a title, FCPX is vulnerable to crashing.

But the most annoying bug I’ve encountered is that occasionally when working, the play (spacebar) and play forward (L) keys stop working in the timeline. I have to select a different window like the event browser and then go back to the timeline to fix. Only it’s not really fixed. The second I go back to the browser for another clip or whatever, when I’m back in the timeline the shortcuts will be broken again.

Hmm. Bug fixes but nothing that addresses the weirdness I’ve been seeing lately.

April 1, 2017 at 5:00 am in reply to: Ripple option not available on some tracks?

There are two basic ways to work with this kind of structure quickly. If you audio is just a VO and doesn’t need to maintain sync with broll elements, then I suggest bumping the VO out of the primary instead of cutting broll into a secondary.

For help with your understanding, a secondary storyline is just a connected clip container. Like every connected clip (ie: anything not in the primary), secondaries are attached to a specific clip or gap in the primary. Secondaries differ from regular connected clips in that you can stuff them with multiple clips and everything is grouped together and attached at only the one point. Inside the container, you can perform ripple edits and even edit into the container directly. This is helpful in scenarios where you want a sequence of broll to be connected to a specific point or audio cue in your story.

In cases like yours where you want to just cover the entire VO with broll, it’s more helpful to make the VO a secondary storyline instead of primary. You do this by lassoing everything in the primary and hitting CMD+OPT+up arrow. This will gather all your VO and drop it below your primary, leaving a gap clip in its place. Then you select whatever broll you’ve already edited into your timeline and hit CMD+OPT+down arrow to drop those connected clips into your primary. Then you can broll and ripple delete to your hearts content.
