  • Selecting All the Clips of a Particular Role??

Posted by Adam Helwig on July 10, 2012 at 2:59 am

Okay, I hope I’m not missing something plainly obvious here.

Here’s my question…In the Timeline Index, you can choose to highlight specific roles, but is there any way to select all the clips of a particular role at once instead of going through the timeline and manually clicking on all the clips of a certain role?

For example, if I wanted to select all of my dialogue role audio clips at once, is there any way to highlight that role and then highlight all of the corresponding clips?

Thanks for any help! Much appreciated!

Unfortunately you’re not missing anything obvious. You can’t select all the clips of a given role in the roles tab of the Timeline Index (although that would be nice). I would suggest sending feedback to Apple via the Final Cut Pro/Provide Final Cut Pro Feedback menu.

To work around your issue, you can go to the clips tab in the index and right-click on the columns and make sure that Roles is checked in the columns view. Then you will see what role each of your clips is. From there you can CMD+select each dialogue clip in your timeline.

Unfortunately, you can’t sort by those columns so you will still have to sift through all the clips to select the correct ones, but it’s a little easier than trying to navigate through the timeline.

Sure, in the timeline index make sure Roles are showing by right clicking on the header and showing roles. Then filter for the name of the role, and then either command-A or click and shift-click to select all of them.

Clever. I forgot the filter function in the index. That makes it a lot easier.

Hi has this been updated yet seems like a no brainer to be able to select all clips of a certain role?

Unfortunately, this doesn’t work in the case where I need to select all audio. Because video/dialog roles don’t separate the audio, even though the audio has been collapsed or expanded.

All I need to do (and I’ve done it before, I just can’t remember at the moment) is to select and disable all “audio” except one new audio track which is a mastered version of the audio for the whole video.

ie I now need all audio removed, so I can replace it with a mastered version of the audio.

[Peter Wood] “All I need to do (and I’ve done it before, I just can’t remember at the moment) is to select and disable all “audio” except one new audio track which is a mastered version of the audio for the whole video.”

Your situation is actually much easier. Just select everything in the timeline (CMD+A) and CMD + deselect the master track. Then, open the inspector and uncheck the audio in the Channel Configuration. This will disable all the audio, even for merged video/audio clips, without affecting video.

Oh you’re right. I didn’t realise that the “checkbox” next to the role name, toggles them on/off.
I’ve gone one step further and changed the role of my master audio to “master” which excludes it from unchecking “music” and “dialogue” roles.
So no need to select anything manually.

Good idea. Using roles to manage mixes and things like that is a great idea. It’s very helpful when versioning. Especially if you have a 5.1, stereo and mono mixes.

Very clever solution! In my opinion, it’s a slightly hidden feature, but it gets the job done—even 13 years after it was posted!
