My guess is that they didn’t anticipate this use of compound clips. Personally, I would create multiple projects as opposed to compound clips. I think storing previous edits in the event browser is sort of like trying to make FCPX behave like FCP7. Still, I suppose it’s to be expected when copy/paste from sequence to sequence was so simple in tab form, and now takes longer because you have to navigate out to the project library to a new sequence and then back again with copied material.

If you are in the event library you can create a compound clip there and will be available like any regular clip. This was discussed in much detail in this forum.
You didnt pay attention to what I asked. Of course you can make compound clips in the event browser…from existing clips. I was asking how he took his edit (performed in the timeline) and transferred it to the event browser. Thankfully I figured out a method by creating an event compound clip in the browser, deleting the contents, and then copying and pasting the contents of a project.

Couple of questions:
1) How exactly are you keeping versions of your edit as compound clips in the event browser? Compound clips created inside a timeline can’t be dragged into the event browser. How do you get them there?
2) Instead of doing that, why not just create duplicate projects? Projects work just like Sequences. You can create folders in the Project Library to put old versions of your edit. For me, I create a folder for the event, and then inside there, I create an OLD projects folder where I store old edits. This way I only see one project at a time.

Another technique would be to make your music into a secondary storyline. Then you can apply markers to it. Seems quicker then moving clips off the primary storyline and leaving gaps clips there.

Great tip Tom. I thought that had gone away. But the key is that you have to lasso all the tracks you wish to blade through otherwise it only cuts through the primary storyline.

You have the basic idea right. Custom speed allows you to keyframe how fast or slow the animation goes. However, you need to also pay attention to the spread parameter. Spread will expand the animation past the word that’s currently being animated. For example, with the Scale In behavior, the 2nd word starts it’s animation before the 1st word has finished because the default spread for that behavior is 2. If you want to ensure that each word has it’s own animation speed, you need to set the spread to 1.
From there the custom speed slider is pretty easy to understand. It goes from 0 to 100, an indication of the percentage of animation in the effect. Place keyframes at places in the timeline where you want each word to animate on. Then adjust the slider until that word is animated. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Well, if you’re trying to make it look like water filling text, then that’s a very difficult effect (simulating liquid). However, if you just want the color to fill text from the bottom up, you can do that by manipulating the opacity of the text. Here’s how.
Add your text and position it. I would choose a thick font as it will show off the effect better. In the text tab of the inspector, click on style and change the Fill With parameter to gradient. Twirl down the gradient parameters to reveal the gradient controls. Pull one of the color tabs off so you’re left with only one color. Change to taste. Click in the opacity strip (the white bar above the color gradient) to add a second opacity tag. Place it on the far right side. Click the left opacity tag and below where it says interpolation, choose Constant from the pop up menu. Then drag the opacity down to 0. This should make the left tag and the opacity strip black (transparent). The right tag will still be white (opaque). Select the right tag, and then keyframe the Location parameter (below Interpolation), to animate the filling of the color.

One thing that Stephen didn’t mention. Since you said that you didn’t want the entire line to animate up at once, you need to apply a sequence text behavioor to the text inside the group. With that you can animate the text pushing up from the line one character at a time. Just make sure that the mask hides the text in it’s starting position below the line.

Two Move behaviors. One the length of the first move, one the length of the 2nd move. The space between the behaviors in the timeline will have the layer standing still. Using the Move behaviors gives you Ease IN/OUT.
