Finally figured this out and thought I’d share:

In FCP 7, a technique I loved to do when cutting a montage scene was to listen to the music and hit the ‘M’ key on the downbeat so I could rough out a cut to the music.

With FCPX, i couldn’t find a way to do that on the music track! Markers would only go on the primary storyline.

So, I simply lifted all my clips up to the secondary storyline, leaving gaps on the primary storyline, and was able to do work like I used to.

I know FCPX is a whole new beast, but some old habits die hard 😉

this is the sort of thing that should always have been done on the source clip (in events now) doing in the timeline is a way but not ideal

that there is no mark to markers is poor though

you probably want to be having the music as the primary storyline in this instance, this would achieve the same as you are trying to do and would be tidier, the other clips connect to that primary storyline (the music is whats leading the visuals)

Excellent point. I guess the same could be said for a VO that leads the visuals too.

Another technique would be to make your music into a secondary storyline. Then you can apply markers to it. Seems quicker then moving clips off the primary storyline and leaving gaps clips there.

Ah, that also works. Thanks Andy

By the way, LOVED your Motion demo at LFCPUG the other night. Learned a ton and picked Motion up the next day. It really does help extend FCPX for any graphics work.
