However, is there really no way to have compressor or final cut just crop and downconvert in a digital format?
There certainly is. Send your HD edit to Compressor as per normal and then apply an appropriate SD target setting for your output file from the Settings > Apple > Other Workflows > Advanced Format Conversions > Standard Definition presets. Next you need to look at that applied setting in the Inspector window and switch to the Geometry tab and change the “Source Inset (Cropping)” >> Crop to: popup to 4×3 1.33:1.
Hope it helps

Hey Jonathan
Each broadcaster you deliver to will have their own technical specifications for program delivery document. That will contain the info you need for each specific broadcaster. I guess what I’m saying is that you need to ask the folks you are delivering to what their requirements are, not us.
Other than that, do you know how to read your scopes and audio meters? And do you know how to use the basic audio filters and video filters like the 3 way color corrector, levels, proc amp etc? If you have a pretty good handle on this then you have no reason to doubt you abilities to deliver for broadcast.

Look in your root /Library folder (the one at the top level of your hard disc along with /Application, /System, /Users etc) … find the QuickTime folder and within that folder find the AppleHDVCodec.component file … Get Info on that file and post back with the Version number for it.

What version of FCP are you using Stephen? Please forgive me for asking, but have you studied the manual with regards to FCP’s time remapping functionality or are you just trying to intuit it? Just need to know where we are starting from.
Cheers

Hi Rose, actually I think you’ll find a simple subclip (Cmd-U) of the section you want to remap should work just fine. Seem to recall that was how I simplified the issue if and when I needed to.

Thanks for posting back David.
Well that makes sense then. I’d guess your client is probably looking at the clip on a different system (not Mac) that is ignoring the start/end payback pointers of your quicktime file (probably doesn’t recognize them) and so simply accessing and displaying the full media, thats why you’re not seeing the same thing. In future, if you’re using QT Player, you can use “Save As” in QT Player instead of using Save. That will copy just the used media into a new file rather than altering metadata only in the existing file.Cheers

[David J. Smolar] “Cut a client’s video into 3 segments”
How? For example, if you used Quicktime Player to trim and save then you have only effectively changed the start and end pointers for playback, not actually changed the source file contents. Please give specific details of your workflow, then folks may be able to suggest where the anomaly you’re seeing could have originated and hopefully can point to a better workflow/solution.

April 23, 2010 at 3:47 am in reply to: PLEASE REPLY! Trying to fix the frame size on my videoJust open the Sequence Settings window and press the Load Sequence preset button at lower left of that window. Select the correct preset for the sequence ie the one that matches the source. When that is done then “select all” in the sequence and choose Modify menu > Conform to Sequence … hopefully that will fix everything up for you, but if you had intentionally done some resizing/reframing in teh sequence then you may have to redo that work.

[Max Carlson] “depending on where I add the dissolve”
No, sadly, if you add a transition using a keyboard shortcut, unfortunately you don’t get any control over this placement, its always “start on” at the head of a clip, “end on” at the tail, or “center on” if its an edit directly between two clips (with appropriate handles) … but if you drag and drop the transition to place it then you can directly control the alignment via your placement when dropping it.
