[Dennis Radeke] “On a more drastic (but cheaper) scale, you could try to format your hard drive and rebuild your Mac to get everything working properly.”

Gosh. Well that is rather drastic advice Dennis (and as time is money I’m not seeing it as particularly cheap either). I appreciate you’re trying to sell Premiere Pro but I’d respectfully suggest that Jason’s issue may have nothing to do with his Mac / FCP install not working properly. Ideal it may not be, but the FCP tapeless ingest system is currently designed to support ingest from camera native media only ie original and correct full folder structure intact. My guess is that Jason’s system is already in good working order and might be doing so quite happily if he had that original media or properly imaged media copy.

Don’t get me wrong tho, am not trying to detract from PP’s ability to better support the plethora of modern camera native formats out there these days, thats a great feature and well worth proselytizing. My EDIUS systems do this too and I regularly bemoan FCP’s lack of support in the area (Of course thats when I’m not too busy shouting at EDIUS for making tasks that would be easy in FCP such a bloody nightmare. Lol)

August 17, 2010 at 4:16 am in reply to: Newbie: adding plugins to FCP

FxFactory plugins (“.fxpack”) live in the /Library/Application Support/Noise Industries folder … they are managed by the FxFactory application (/Applications/FxFactory) … open FxFactory and you can enable / disable already installed plugins plus it links directly to their website where you can browse for and download new FxFactory based plugins

Alternatively if you’re still having trouble using the FxFactory app then you can also check out Jon Chappell’s excellent “FCS Maintenance Pack” which is a great suite of tools for helping you manage and troubleshoot your Final Cut Studio equipped workstation … it includes a Plug In Manager helper application. A fully functional 15 day free demo is available ( so even if you don’t have the resources to buy it right now, you’ll probably be able to leap frog the problem you’re facing at the moment … then buy it when you’re in a better position to do so 🙂 )

Best of luck … and remember when you’re using those effects that the golden rule is “less is more”.

    Cheers

    Hey Prasheel

The website where you downloaded the plugins, or the download itself will have instructions on how to install … you’re really meant to read those instructions you know!

If you can’t find the instructions then please detail with specific detail which free plugins you are trying to use as there are a few different locations where they should be installed depending on the plugin type (FxPlug, FxScript, FxFactory etc)

August 16, 2010 at 4:08 pm in reply to: how to export a sequence with clips

    Mike

The procedure you are after is accessed via FCP’s “Media Manager” interface … you select the sequence in your project, then choose File menu > Media Manager… this will open the Media Manager window where you’d want to choose to “Copy” your media, tick the checkbox for “Delete unused media from duplicated items”, tick the checkbox for “Use Handles” (optional but recommended), tick the checkbox for “Duplicate selected items and place into a new project” … then click the “Browse…” button and target your new hard drive as the destination for the copied and trimmed media, and finally click “OK” and save the new project file on your local hard disc (and I’d recommend when the process is complete and you’re all done then make a copy of that project file on the new hard drive too for safety).

Probably a good idea to remove the old media drive after all this, the open the new project you’ve just created and watch through the edit sequence to make sure that everything is where it should be … there are plenty of surprises in Borneo, you don’t need any unexpected ones from your FCP project once you get there.

    Cheers

Sorry to hear that Jason, does seem like something is working agains you with this.

Might be time to take a different tack … assuming this is important footage I’d suggest you grab and test a demo of Calibrated Software’s EX-MP4 Import which will allow you to work directly with the MP4 media in FCP without rewrap … if that works for you then it’s probably worth the nominal cost of entry.

An alternative to that may be to grab a demo of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, which should also work directly with the native MP4 media … you could then export the clips to a more suitable intermediate for use in your FCP project (or just cut the whole thing in Premiere!)

The exceptional VLC media player application should also be able to open and playback the raw MP4 files … your export options from VLC are extremely limited, but needs must when the devil drives etc

[Jason Porthouse] “I can;t get Clip Browser to recognise these clips, it just doesn’t see them. However, if I create a file structure which is Test/BPAV/CLPR, then place the files in that, Clip Browser sees them.”

What is your import procedure Jason … the manual offers the following:

1 In the Tree View pane of an Explorer window, select the media or folder that contains the MP4 or DV-AVI files to be imported.
2 Do one of the following.
    • Select [Import…] from the [File] menu.
    • Right click the media or folder and select [Import…]
from the context menu. The Import dialog opens.
3 Select a file format from the [Files of type] list, and specify the MP4 or DV-AVI files to import by selecting them from the file list.
4 Click the [Start] button to start the import, or the [Cancel] button to cancel it.

A dialog illustrating the progress of the import operation opens when the import starts.

You could also have a bash with Jon Chappell’s Final Cut Maintenance Pack (or more specifically the QT Repair tool):

I hear you Jason … but did you try this bit yet …

If this still isn’t working then use Clip Browser to create all new BPAV folders for the contained MP4 media and use these new BPAV folders instead of your manually reconstructed ones.

…as in, don’t create the BPAV folder yourself, you use Clip Browser … point it at the MP4 media and have the app copy the clip into a brand new BPAV folder structure that it creates for you.

    Does that not work either?
