Don’t fret man. This is a fact of life with modern computing. Whatever you buy is pretty much out of date before you get it out of the box. Just try to remember that the top notch machine you just bought didn’t suddenly get any less capable because of this announcement. Use it, make some money practicing your craft, it will serve you very well indeed.

Then I think you need to hold fire a little longer man, if this is only just in the “being shown to a select few” stage then logic suggests that its still in alpha, pre-beta.

I believe your understanding of the FCS beta program may be out of date.

From a software development point, again that would better describe the alpha stage.

As far as I know, the only means for outputting a broadcast reference signal from an iMac at this time is by using an original Matrox MXO box … that will cost you around $1000 which kind of blows your budget before you’ve even begun.

you can do that with my free Region Blur plug … it’s a really nasty render hog tho when its set to mosaic rather than blur or smudge

You could then, for example, add the blur to the lower layer and use a garbage matte on the upper layer to isolate the area of the image you want to stay in focus … cutting away the upper image then reveals the blurred image layer below.

With the IoHD, ProRes is always used as an intermediate when passing any HD signal to the host computer via FireWire. Other than that, intermediate compression to ProRes is not involved. So for your HD > SD example above then it’s not passing through any ProRes compression along the way. I had a really nice email discourse with Jon Thorn at AJA on all of this a couple of years ago and he was impressively patient with my hopelessly dumb questions as I tried to figure out the various signal paths and how and where the ProRes hardware compression was involved, I thoroughly recommend giving him a shout if you have any concerns at all. Always a pleasure to deal with AJA.

not that I’m especially inclined to speculate on this occasion but to be fair theres really only 1 item in AJA’s “IO” lineup (albeit the flagship item) that is based on ProRes

As already explained Nick, if its less than 100 minutes then it will fit on a single layer (25GB) disc.

What’s the duration of the movie Nick? The maximum data rate H264 for BluRay that Compressor can natively encode to is 35 Mbps … at that rate you’ll get about 100 minutes of video on a single layer (25GB) disc, regardless of the original raw file size.
