not quite the thriving thread i was hoping for when i woke up this morning
bogiesan, thanks for the tip, that sounds exactly what i’m looking for, i’ll check it out.
cheers

thanks guys
good tips, I’ve just checked in AE and the alpha channel is correct, I’ve looked at the alpha channel of the clip in the viewer and again it is correct… so this is good, seems FCP is indeed interpreting correctly 🙂
the problem I’m having seems to happen when I place the clip in the timeline … I’ve been using test sequences in DVCPR50, Animation and Avid Meridian Compressed (the latter two using Millions of Colours+)
obviously I’m doing something wrong, please jump in and correct me !
again, thanks

no great insight i’m afraid, but i had a similar issue once and eventually tracked it down to a bad ethernet cable, also, if you’re otherwise networked with fixed IP’s or some such, you might try creating a new location specifically for using RAID Admin …
hope it turns out to be something simple

Thanks for your the extra info Joachim, its much appreciated.
Very Best Regards

Xsan is definately something to go for if its within your budget …
having said that, it is possible to edit in place using a single networked Xserve RAID and upto 3 or 4 editstations depending on the codec you’re using and the network bandwidth. you won’t be able to capture simultaneously, or (in my experience) capture and playback simultaneously, but we have managed 4 streams of DVCPro50 over a dedicated gigabit network.
now…having said that, i wouldn’t necessarily suggest you do it. although in repeated testing we have managed it, in reality we use the Xraid’s as a central redundant backup, copying the media to the remote editstations scratch disk for editing. we do however perform finshing and playout from the remote editstations over the network
hope it helps

not sure if this might be your problem, but you might want to check your field dominance is still correct after the upgrade …. if you’re seeing the chopiness in transitions and other renedred areas (like speed ups) that does sound like the field order has become reversed?
maybe worth a look

Hi Joachim
Interesting post. Could you offer more details regarding your edit enviroment/workflow?
You currently have 50+ edit stations …. are they all linked by Xsan? (and isn’t that incredibly expensive just in fiber switches?!)
You’re now using FCP 5’s native IMX support (capturing via SDI thru AJAIOLD?) … i understood that Telestream was the only option currently for bringing in footage as IMX, is that part of the equation?I’m always looking to help improve our own setup (currently 17 FCP stations, hoping to expand to 30 later in the year), at the moment we’re capturing to DVCPro50 via SDI to BlackMagic. IMX was judged to be a better codec but was as yet unsupported when we set up the system, at the moment we’re still testing FCP5 and have not yet implemented any IMX solution (hence my obvious interest!!)
Any insight and expertise you’d be willing to share would be very much appreciated.
I’d imagine it would be of general interest to everyone here, but if you prefer, you can also contact me using andymees-AT-startv.comCheers

hi Thax
with the boards indulgence i will reply …
my comment was not directed personally at you nor the other poster who made a similar comment, please don’t take it so. i was simply focused on the original post …
christian mentions that his question is not directly fcp related and he mentions specifically that he emptied the trash, his post appealed to board members who may have some knowledge or experience in recovering the deleted files and i responded to that.
i do feel that when someone posts a specific scenario and appeals for specific help then we should be trying to give what guidance we can and not simply question the posters facts. however, clearly your intentions were good and my comment caused you some offense, in retrospect the use of ‘smug’ was unecessarily inflamatory and my appologies to you. my presence on the board is of course primarily selfish, i’m here to glean whatever expertise i can, but when i think i may be able to contribute something of value i do so. i’m certainly not here to cause enemies.
respectfully

Hi christian
sadly i’d have to echo bogiesan’s advice … don’t expect to recover your data, prepare for the worst.whilst the file recovery programs ‘do’ work, they are primarily geared towards recovering data from a damaged disk … most importantly they scour the hard disk for directory data and use that data to locate the files … recovering data that has been ‘trashed’ and the trash ’emptied’ is not entirely the same as the directory data has been erased … such file recovery is only possible by scavenging the entire disk … and frankly it is rarely very successful (often, they may find files but with none of the header info, rendering them useless, especially if they are Mac files with resource “_rsrc” data)
simply put, whilst in os 9 file recovery was relatively simple and the results usually good, in os x this is is not the case.
if the lost files cannot be recaptured and you have no backup or other recourse then you might consider sending your drive to a data recovery specialist, they are expensive but they do have expertise in these matters BUT again i should stress that theres still no guarantee of actually recovering any of the lost files.
shit happens. nobody ever means for it to happen, so just ignore the smug ‘how can you have done this’ comments. but one thing is for sure … theres nothing like some real world experience of data loss to make a person implement some effective backup strategies in the future.
best of luck with your lost files

Hi Karenin
unfortunately, if the ‘bleeding’ is recorded that way, theres not too much in the way of a quick fix.
a good ‘ending’ point might be to apply the broadcast safe filter … that at least will clamp your luminance and chominance levels to prevent any further chroma tearing.having said that, i’m sure that some of this boards’ luminaries will be able to offer some more specifc help
best of luck
Andy
