Double check your Audio Only capture preset :

Go to your FCP Audio/Video Settings… window (Cmd – Opt – Q) and switch to the Capture Presets tab
Select any capture preset and press the Duplicate button.
In the subsequent Capture Preset Editor window:
Set the Name and Description to USB Audio Only
Set the Quicktime Video Settings >> Digitizer to None
Set the Quicktime Audio Settings >> Device to USB Microphone, Format to 48 kHz
and then press OK

Now open your Log and Capture window and switch to the Capture Settings tab
From the Device Control popup select Non-Controllable Device
and from the Capture/Inputl popup select USB Audio Only
Now switch to the Clip Settings tab and uncheck the Video checkbox (leave Audio checked).

If everything is working you should see the levels jumping in the Clip Settings audio meter when you speak into the USB Mic.
If so, click Capture : Now and away you go. In future you should just be able to easily access the USB Audio Only capture preset as and when needed.

Does that work? Hope so … its what works for me.

Maybe you should elaborate a little on where these files come from. Am guessing here, but it sounds to me like they may be XDCAM EX clips in their native MP4 wrapper? If so then you don’t have that quicktime codec (XDCAM EX) on your system unless you have FCP installed (it does not come with FCE). Other than VLC, you can download and use Sony’s free Clip Browser application to view the files. You can also download and use Sony’s free XDCAM Transfer application to rewrap these MP4 files as Quicktime MOV files (but you still won’t be able to read them in Quicktime without the XDCAM EX codec). You can buy and install Calibrated Software’s XDDecode Quicktime component tho .. that will allow you to read any Quicktime (MOV) wrapped movie versions of these files (ie those imported via XDCAM Transfer), and/or you could also buy and install Calibrated Software’s MP4-EX Quicktime component that would allow you to directly open the MP4 files in Quicktime without even rewrapping as MOV first (you still have to have the XDDecode component as well tho).

Note: Sony have a new app called “XDCAM Browser” … that one actually combines the functions of XDCAM Transfer and Clop Browser in a single app. Not yet quite as polished and capable as the previous two apps combined would be enough for your needs of viewing and potentially rewrapping.

The quality and length of the cable could potentially cause signal degradation issues (and the “Uncompressed” codec is still, strictly speaking, applying compression as it’s recording 422 not 444 ) but basically yes, the quality of the captured footage should be enough to satisfy even your most demanding clients. What you do with it afterwards tho … 😉

IMHO, Compared to a full featured integrated (with the NLE) capture application, yeah, it’s kinda basic.

Fair enough. Am always interested in another perspective. Would be interested to hear your expanded thoughts on that with reference to the existing capture tool in FCP7. You do note that specifically you’d miss the extended metadata that you’re getting from baseband capture in FCP vs using a 3rd party tool (like Media Express). Can you expand on that?
