check that the “Anamorphic” flag is not being enabled on these clips in error … the extended frame size is consistent with an anamorphic correction:- 1920 x 1.3333 = 2560

Mike searched the web a bit, found some outdated info … and billed you for it! I would be very wary of doing business with him again. As has been noted time and again surely anywhere you have researched this issue, support for the then full range of XDCAM HD codecs was originally added in FCP 5.1.2, previously only the “SP” setting was supported using the generic HDV setting. With FCP 6.0.2 further support was added for the full raster XDCAM HD codecs from the XDCAM EX cameras.

seem to recall hearing somewhere that the ability to monitor audio from HDV whilst capturing was something that just showed up in 6.0.3 …is that idle chatter or did it really happen?

the EX1 and the F700 are very different cameras … the EX1 is at the low end in their XDCAM HD product range, the F700 is at high end.
now, if you’re on the lookout for something to trump all the EX1 early adopters then maybe you want to pick up an EX3?

well you can use the distort tool to stretch the image, but its kind of pointless as the result would be exactly the same as zooming in on the 4:3 letterbox original. When you capture it as anamorphic you are just telling FCP to display the raw image data stretched horizontally, then when you add the vertical stretch to correct the aspect the result is going to be stretched both horizontally and vertically (ie zoomed)

Yes. Sony’s new PDW-F700 shoots to MPEG HD 4.2.2 – a 50 Mb/s VBR variant of the original 25 Mb/s CBR HDV standard. Without hard facts to the contrary this would seem to be no more than that.

– Which is more reliable? in what sense? image quality or recording format or ?
– Which is better on storage space or system resources? for better on storage space the nod would go to XDCAM HD, for better on system resources the nod goes to DVCPRO HD by a mile
– Which is more flexible (converting from one format to another, downrezing for SD, using in compositing, etc.) ? much of a muchness … though DVCPRO HD’s 4.2.2 sampling vs current gen XDCAM HD’s 4.2.0 should give it the edge for compositing
– Which is better for archiving? to what?

well, your student’s boyfriend (the computer geek Apple employee) may be working in the pro apps division or perhaps a special projects division where they maintain windows compatible builds of the software (just as they always maintained intel compatible builds of the OS)
… but you should advise your student to warn her boyfriend to keep shtum if he want’s to keep his double-oh status at Apple !

Fwiw XDT2.5.1 is working fine here with FCP5.1.4, 10.4.11 on all our Intel Mac’s.
If it helps, although you cannot currently see the proxies (which would seem to be an issue with your QT install) you can “name” the discs with the XDT app in the Info tab at lower right … that disc name will carry over as a Reel ID to FCP when you import your clips, saving you from having to assign a Reel ID within FCP itself.
