In such a setup I would think as a dedicated edit station the iMac would be a pretty efficient and cost effective solution, especially if set up as part of a larger cluster for Compressor output. At the time of writing 4GB RAM is a sweet enough for a FCP setup if you don’t expect to have other apps open or active. We all live in hope however that this will be addressed in a future version, but you can’t make effective purchase decisions today based on what may or may not be available tomorrow.

Respectfully, I would suggest that Sverker may be misunderstanding what is being striven for here ie the creation of multiple discretely named subclips from a single clip’s essence.

Currently, naming of subclips is NOT possible with XDCAM Transfer (PDZK-P1) up to and including version 2.7.0
To be more precise, when creating multiple subclips from a single clip instance it is NOT possible to name the subclips … it’s not even possible to name the first one. What you can name is the clip itself. When you create one or more subclips from that clip’s essence then each and every subclip will retain the original clip’s name. User preference settings allow each subclip to be appended by a sequential number and/or the in and out timecode and/or other predetermined data.

Naming subclips has been a feature request since the beta versions prior to the 1.0 release

How much space do you have on your External drive? Does that sound about right?
How much space do you have on your built-in system drive? Does that sound about right?

Go to your XDCAM Transfer menu > Preferences window >> Import tab … what path is shown for the Import Location?

Why not just create your master in a 16:9 native (HD) timeline? As you have said, it has already been shot 4:3 safe, so as long as you continue to edit and compose your keys 4:3 safe then you’ll be just fine. Your final step then would be export a 4:3 center cut for youtube or whatever.

There are any number of ways of creating for yourself some 4:3 guides to use whilst editing in a 16:9 sequence. For myself, I created a safe guides generator that I can throw on if and when needed … I just have to remember to turn it off again before I output! You’re welcome to use it if its helpful:

duplicate the sequence … in the copy select all and set the playhead at the head of the sequence (on the first frame of the first clip), then drag the selection to the canvas window and drop it on the red Overwrite overlay (NOT the Overwite w/Transition overlay)

Well at the risk of being painfully obvious … have you got enough disk space?

Where are you importing the clip to? Internal hard drive, dedicated media drive or ? You target the Import directory in the XDCAM Preferences which by default is set to the ~/Movies folder. You will probably want to change this to your external. What version of XDCAM Transfer are you using? Versions prior to 2.x had a major bug which could result in your hi res imports being directed to the otherwise hidden /Volumes directory if you inadvertently launched XDCAM Transfer without the target drive mounted.
