The hostility comes from a company giving a carpenter an excellent hammer and then suddenly, without warning, saying you can no longer use the hammer that made you the most productive carpenter around. Now it’s time to use our new screwdriver that does differently most of what you spent a decade perfecting….and we’ll put in the rest of the functionality in the next 18 months.
Those carpenters weren’t waiting around….
Yes – the hammer is still around (and maybe you can buy it somewhere on the web) – but it’s rusting and will soon become useless as the company upgrades it’s OS……
all that said – FCP X is an interesting, useful tool – just not the tool many editors are comfortable using….so they’ve grabbed other tool boxes that feel familiar (AVID/ADOBE)
The improvements are excellent….but aren’t enough to lure me back…i wish someone would post a tutorial that shows how to mix audio without rubber banding everything as that’s the one thing that’s kept us from even considering X (yes i know you can select regions and drop or raise volume with keystrokes..but that’s not mixing….and you could do that and more in the older app)

Spot on article, Oliver…..I’m in the group that uses all three “A’s” and agree that FCP 7 is getting more difficult to put up with with the out of memory, trans-coding etc….although I miss it’s familiarity and easy of doing pretty much anything with composting, etc.
Not a huge AVID fan – feels clunky and modular to accomplish some of the simplest things but it is indeed powerful under the hood. AMA is nice in theory, but you still must trans-code to get a finished product out of the editor.
Adobe Premiere CS6 feels the most like the FCP7 replacement. If you’ve been a legacy user, you can load those keyboard shortcuts and feel like you are in the same (but much more responsive) program. Premiere lets you throw every format and the kitchen sink in the timeline without trans-coding – and that is an enormous time saver – even quirky .mts files and flv files will play and edit.
Some things in premiere at first look like they aren’t there (transfer modes are actually a key filter…if you want to manipulate the “Canvas” window you must first double click to activate it)
and some need improvement – media management, (audio automation works only at the timeline track, not clip level) which is pretty useless unless you have the edit locked because cutting something out of the timeline after you’ve mixed screws up the mix….the keyframes stay in the same place in the timeline even if you’ve cut a clip)
As for FCP X – it’s a program i want to love but can only have a platonic relationship with – audio makes me want to scream….roles and stems and breaking and closing “tracks” seems needlessly fussy and complex — and rubber banding audio seems like a decade leap backwards when every other program allows you to mix in realtime and record key-frames.
And Apple’s “we know what’s good for you” approach to track collisions seems silly – not once in 20 years of editing has this ever been a problem — select a section – move it forward – make your edit….no collision.
If Apple put in a “classic” option for real audio tracks and removed the fussy secondary story lines and connected clip nonsense…there’s a chance for a great editor love story with the program – lots of great easy to execute effects (although it needs a dedicated titling tool)
In the meantime, Premiere Pro, as Oliver mentioned, seems like the natural FCP7 replacement (and it works flawlessly with audition and After effects for more complex finishing work)
No matter what you use, this forum is endlessly entertaining….

Boris’s Soundbite is a terrific tool for this – if you have a verbatim transcript you don’t even need the timecode connection — type in the phrase and find the bite you need – quick and painless — it’s an amazing timesaver – we’ve used with Final Cut and it now apparently works with Premiere Pro as well

Great that Dennis and other Adobe folks are here reading and listening. Apple’s top people don’t respond in this or any other forum that I can see.
Adobe is extraordinary in their responsiveness. I just finished our first all Premiere long form project and everything that Shane mentioned is correct – especially the media management and audio mixing headaches. The Adobe team is working to fix that. Overall it was a terrific experience and a very easy transition from FCP 7.

Boris BCC is an extraordinary plug in set — in FCP 7 and now X and Premiere – it’s been part of AVID for years but now only comes “free” with Symphony. Well worth the cost of the set – they are always upgrading and company founder Boris is one of the most accessible anywhere – have a question or issue – he’ll answer personally.

without keyframing – is Slice X better than Advance Masking Effects from FCPeffects.com? Masking video without being able to keyframe seems very limited and in many cases, useless

Although Dennis, please have engineers work on the odd work around for transitions (you must split video into two tracks…something that goes back to Premiere version 1.0 – surely this can be fixed to let transitions work like the build in versions!
If you haven’t used FX Factory …you can try everything for free with watermarks — outstanding set of effects and plug ins along with Boris Continuum Complete and Coremelt — if you have deep pockets – these three sets will provide everything you need.
