Herb, you are such a Debbie Downer! 🙂 How about someone invent natural sounding headphone so we can edit in a phone booth! (wait there are no more phone booths)

Funny, I kept reading the post over and over and over – and I never saw the word “fix” anywhere in it.

If there’s nothing to fix, why are they hiring someone specifying skills needed to fix or change if its already perfect and the current team has already done it right?

interesting that they say bring it to “Final Cut Pro Studio” not FCPX which is no longer a “studio” — could final cut pro 8 be on the way?!?!?! 🙂

February 10, 2013 at 12:28 am in reply to: Premiere Pro – I could be convinced!

I’m doing a job this weekend with FCP 7 for a client that’s got 100’s of hours of repeatable projects and can’t upgrade…this after spending months on Premiere CS 6 —

It’s painful going back to FCP….hours of render time — transcoding, rerendering.

Premiere CS 6 – once you get used to some of the differences..is a joy

    no rendering while edit
throw everything AND the kitchen sink in a timeline – no problem
    quick
    intuitive

Yes there are some issues they will certainly address in CS7 (audio mixing, media management)

Yes it needs a more robust set of plugins – but developers are katching up)

And yes if you’ve worked with FCP legacy – you can easily make the switch without skipping a beat —

Bill – I rarely use an outboard control surface , for the most part I just use the software mixer built into FCP since I think version 2 or 3……

using your metric we are at version 7 for FCPx….but that’s not the point….virtually every NLE has an automation mixer built in the software….it’s simply too clunky and time consuming mixing subtle nat sound and music peaks and valleys with a key frame pen tool – that’s X (ten) giant steps backward.

The rest of FCP X is useful but the audio is a deal breaker for every day use

Bill, I in fact do and have used the program but your work around to a true mixer still involves a lot of by hand key frame tweaking for a real mix. Subtle volume changes in music for emphasis and silence require real time mixing. That’s not a one “range click” and you’re done issue.

I second Shane’s remarks and add my perennial plea for a real time, records keyframes mixer.

It’s in virtually every other NLE including legacy…we use it every day, every hour.. and I still can’t see how editors actually prefer adding keyframes by hand for every volume change and duck.

  • Yes I use the mixer (software and outboard) all the time — in every program FCP 7, Premiere Pro and Avid — it’s far easier to finesse a music duck and bring it up in real time than tediously placing control points….drawing in dips and peaks..playing…no not quite…try again……the mixer lets you do it in one pass and hit undo if it doesn’t work.

…the Vocal Rider looks promising – does it work inside FCPX?
