I was wondering if you can put me in touch with someone using PPRO in an Isilon NAS environment. Lets just say that is another piece of the headache with the 30 seat deployment. I know Isilon had someone from Adobe demonstrating PPRO work flow, but I did not get to the show to meet up with the Isilon folks. Also if you have any best practices white papers dealing with PPRO and NAS environments would be appreciated.

As someone who has been living the transition pain of CS5.5 on a mac for 2 months, I can tell you that I hope CS6 solves a ton of issues that are on the Mac. The marketing hype at NAB is one thing, the actual implementation in a 24 hour TV Network is another. We are doing our part by upgrading machines to newer model macs, making sure all GFX cards have updated drivers, all OS installations are up to date…. but still the playback on CS5.5 with Kona cards is horrible. AJA has admitted their drivers have issues, so we are trying to find work arounds till CS6 ships. I hear the Adobe team has put a large effort this year into re-tooingl their 3rd party interface with the software. I sure hope this will solve the issues I am seeing in multiple edit bays. Nothing like running into so many issues that we have to fall back to FCP 6 just to get projects to air on time.
Here is to hoping next Monday will be the shipping day and we can get a copy of CS6 to put through immediate testing. Going through such a large transition to CS5.5 has not been a pleasant experience after being in the FCP world for so long. Yes, FCP has had its issues as well, but we moved to CS5.5 believing it would be a simpler transition. I have high hopes for CS6, but for now I’ll just have to wait and see what the real world implementation holds.

How old is your hardware? You definitely want to have newer gear to deal with some of the current Adobe issues. Tons of ram, an NVIDIA gfx card will be a must. If you think bumping an old tower to Lion and stuffing CS5.5 into it will work flawlessly, well your in for some struggles.
If you are running Kona 3 cards in the Mac Pro’s, the current drivers are horrible!! Stuttering audio, and stuttering video playback is a real work stopper! Adobe and AJA know this and had to rewrite their entire I/O interface. CS6 hopefully addresses this problem.
If you archive or media manage your projects, be prepared for more drive space or LTO tapes. Adobe’s “project manager” is not space friendly. It takes the entire project, not always the “trimmed” version. I think CS6 might have better media managing, but have not read anything about it yet.
Over the past few months of moving 20 Mac Pro systems to CS5.5, the transition has not been easy. There have been days when going back to FCP just to get a project completed for air was needed. These are all growing and transition pains that might work better under CS6, but with today’s hardware and current build, it is not all clean and easy like the marketing material you read.
I really want this transition to work, but with the current AJA hardware issues, buggy interactions with Lion, you are in for a rough start. Clone your system drive and definitely load up CS5.5 and test your current workflow. See what works and then compare the changes made in CS6.

You need to “twirl open” the little triangle (collapse- expand track) to expand the tracks first, then grab the top of the video track and pull them up.

Totally speculating…. I think this is a definite “feature” in future versions to come. With the iPad changing the hardware landscape, the Ap store model and gesture based track pad’s, Apple will definitely be offering more touch based software. Keyboard options will still be there…. for a little while. Think back to Apple getting rid of the Floppy disk and the uproar. It will be an interesting couple of months as the new software gets released with the new operating system.

As others have said, too soon to tell. This was only a technology preview of what is coming. So much of the product is still under NDA. Give it a few weeks to see what might be the “one more thing.” Heck, I’m still stuck on 6.06! I work in a broadcast facility with 45+ FCP seats and it will be months before any change will come. Feel your pain, but don’t jump the gun on one announcement that doesn’t show the full picture.

Engineers changed their mind so I never got past the download. From the info I received it was around $1,300 for single seat license, but who knows now with the Euro in flux. The show I wanted to use it for had some budget issues, so not my choice to get it or not. Looked like a great little package for quick turn around projects.
