  • It depends on the the nature of your work. If you do highly complex, render intensive projects, then every CPU cycle you can get is important.

But if you’re working on a project that can RAM preview within a few minutes, and render in a few hours, then the trouble involved with project, plugin and system management, to control system-wide renders, may be simply un-economical.

I use Nucleo Pro on a 4-core Mac, and find there are few projects that can’t be rendered while I’m working on something new on the same machine. Only you know if you’re requirements are more intensive.

  • It’s not possible for two Particular layers to truly interact, but you can fake it by dividing the Z depth of your scene into zones and using the “Far Vanish” and “Near Vanish” visibility parameters in Particular.

Basically, once you have your two particle systems set up correctly, duplicate each into the number of Z-space zones you desire, then use the Far and Near Vanish settings to make their relevant particles visible.

So, for example, lets call the Particle layers A and B. Duplicate each, then distribute their stacking order:

    Layer A copy
    Layer B copy
    Layer A
    Layer B

In Layer A&B copies, set Far Vanish to 10,000, Near Vanish to 0

In Layers A&B, set far vanish to 20,000, near vanish to 10,000.

The result is that all particles with a Z-space of 10,000 or less will appear in front of all particles with a Z-space of 10,000-20,000.

Some of the effects in the clip you linked to involve time-remapping camera moves, so it helps to shoot appropriately.

Most of the sharp moves could be easily achieved with standard transform controls in AE with motion blur applied.

But if you want an easy-to-use solution, check out Andrew Kramer’s Twitch plugin:

Just a final post to say this issue WAS a card or cable fault and is now resolved. I was contacted by Blackmagic US and directed to my local Australian distributor. I sent the card on Monday and have received a brand new replacement on Thursday.

I couldn’t ask for better service from Blackmagic – many thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion, but this is one of 4 systems all running house sync. The other systems are all problem-free, and if I swap out this card to a different system the problem moves with the card. (The other machines use Decklink Extreme HD cards, so I can’t do a cable comparison, unfortunately).

Kristian – greatly appreciate any info you can provide re: a cable replacement.

November 21, 2007 at 7:52 am in reply to: No audio in Save RAM Preview CS3?

I’m experiencing this same issue on 5 various Macs (PPC and Intel) since installing CS3. All my systems have minimum 4GB RAM, and Decklink cards installed.

The standard RAM preview Output Module has audio enabled anyway, but I’ve also created my own custom Output Modules with audio enabled, and have had no success. Intermittently the audio will suddenly start being saved with RAM previews during a session, but as soon as AE is restarted the problem returns.

This has been occurring for two months since installation without resolution, and I’m amazed it hasn’t generated more discussion – surely I’m not the ONLY one experiencing this issue repeatedly? If so, what could be common to ALL my systems that’s causing the fault?

    Any input greatly appreciated.

Frankly, a few cans of pea soup and a piece of hosepipe are A LOT cheaper (both price and time-wise) than a particle plugin like Particular, and you’ll gross your audience out a lot more if the vomit is believable.

I’ve still got a couple of ICE boards in a cupboard somewhere. Perhaps you could collect enough of them to glue them all into an ICE sculpture…?

Sadly, it’s VERY expensive hardware that’s now completely worthless.

Deinterlacing shouldn’t generally make any difference to the brightness of your footage. How exactly are you deinterlacing the footage?
