Hi Matt. To simply move an image there are several effects that work ranging from resize (the most simple) to 3D Warp (the most complex). In your case as the footage needs to be keyed too you can actually do the movement inside the spectramatte effect (which is my favourite for keying). At the bottom of the list of parameters in the spectramatte are options to resize or move your image around, after you have performed the key.

Unlike FCP, their is no option to shorten the clip as you speed it up so if you speed it up so much that you reach the end of the media by the time the clip ends then Avid simply freezes on the final frame of the media. You can either trim the clip or reduce the speed to fix this.

This worked in previous versions but not in 5. Its a known bug, I believe.

I would suggest Matrox MXO2 Minis or AJA I/O Express with Media Composer in the offline suites. An Avid Nitris with Symphony in the online suite, and if its just basic audio sweetening maybe a Pro Tools 9 system with just a basic mixer/i/o (like the M-Audio ProjectMix) and a pair of genelecs.

In the offline and audio suites you could even consider iMacs now that the Matrox can connect via thunderbolt.

  • My guess would be you would need the same codec pack installed on the encoding system as on the Avid system. Never tried this, but what happens if you install the new codec pack on an old MC system? Does the old version of Avid then use it?

Compositing in After Effects? Automatic Duck plugin may help you out. Can convert AAF to After Effects compositions I think.

I thought perhaps if you brought in the correct files via AMA you could force a “relink to selected” just using timecode.

  • If EDLs are not an option you could link to the necessary footage via AMA and link the sequence to the Raw files, then simply transcode the sequence.

August 25, 2011 at 9:48 am in reply to: Avid fast import?

If you are doing a fast import it would say “fast importing” in the box. Are you certain you transcoded to a frame rate, frame size and codec that matches your project precisely? Any reason you are choosing to use MPEG streamclip to convert files rather than just importing in to Avid or AMAing and then transcoding?

  • I don’t think this possible because the Apple HDV codec is different to the HDV codec used in Avid and fast import only works if the codecs match. In terms of capturing HDV into Avid I still don’t understand why you are having so much trouble with it. I have done it countless times using various cameras and decks.
