  • Encoding using current DNXHD codecs for Fast Import into MC 3.1

    Hey Gang:

Interesting quandary, and I don’t have a 3.1 system to test with.

Let’s say you wanted to build an encode station to create the following files:

    DNxHD.mov
    Meridien.mov

and use them as files for FAST IMPORT into MC 3.1.3. I’m concerned that the current codec pack from Avid may cause issues with 3.1.3 – as the DNXHD codec has been tweaked several times since then….I’m unsure about the Meridien compressed codec.

Any idea if this will be an issue? Or, could I conceivably track down a codec pack from that “era” (ha!), install it, so the encode solution uses that codec pack?

    I’d love feedback.

    ~Michael

My guess would be you would need the same codec pack installed on the encoding system as on the Avid system. Never tried this, but what happens if you install the new codec pack on an old MC system? Does the old version of Avid then use it?

It does cause issues. The files encoded with the newer codec don’t play properly on older systems and older files don’t play correctly on newer systems. I would try the newer codecs on the older systems as the fewer files circulating using outdated codecs the better.

    Thanks for the input.

Given the fact there are dozens of systems in the MC 3.1.3 workflow, tied to several other workflows, I think attempting to disrupt that may be a massive issue. It may make more sense to track down the appropriate codec pack for 3.1.3 (or, just install that version of MC) on the encoding box.

Thanks again for the feedback, if I’m missing anything, I’d love to hear about it.
