I think what he meant is that a frame of 35mm film, the medium itself, is basically 4:3 (the Academy ratio is 1.37:1). Anything beyond that is a result of using a matte and/or anamorphic process to create the various aspect ratios for final viewing.

FCP rescue is a convenient little app to have as it makes trashing FCP prefs as simple as a mouse click.
https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/It might be a corrupt project, sequence, or piece of media. Try creating a new sequence and see if you get the same result. If yes, the try creating a new project and see if you get the same result. If yes, trying using different media to see if you get the same result. If not, then my guess would be the HDV media is bad. Try recapturing a small chunk of the HDV media and see if it exhibits the bad behavior as well. If so, the the problem could be the tape, the deck/camera used for capture, or the machine used for capture. Which would suck because then you’d need a separate computer and a separate deck/camera to be able to use the process of elimination to finally track down the culprit.
Recently I had some DVCPro HD footage showing similar behavior and I eventually tracked it down to being bad source clips. I don’t know if the problem was from the tape itself or a bad capture though ’cause I was pressed for time so I just made sure I didn’t apply transitions to any of the clips that came from the bad tape.

I call it a bug for two reasons. First, the behavior is improper (I’m telling FCP to render yet it conforms) and the improper behavior is repeatable, and only appears, under certain conditions. For example, if I select Render/All and have every option checked (Full, Unlimited, Preview, etc.,) it will perform a conform. If I select Render/All and I don’t have every option checked (it doesn’t matter which one(s) are/aren’t checked) it will perform a render. if I select Render Only and choose any option it always results in a render. This is on my 2.66 quad core running 6.0.3 and 10.4.11. On my G4 running 5.1.4 and 10.4.11 my HDV video has always rendered properly no matter what the Sequence->Render options were set at.

The “conforming when I just want to render” thing I think is a bug because I’ve worked on multiple machines cutting HDV and sometimes when I hit render FCP will render but other times it will start conforming the video. What I’ve noticed is that hitting “command + R” will result in either a conform or a render depending on the machine. Hitting “option + R” or going up to the menu and selecting Sequence-> Render Only->XYZ will result in the machine rending. As was said before though, changing your sequence to render into ProRes will be faster than having it render in HDV.
As for having to switch back to HDV for the final render before output to tape I’m not sure because I’ve never gone back to HDV tape.

If I was me I’d hold off on doing all this until I had a buyer. Right now your are just guessing at what a buyer would want and I doubt you’ll be lucky enough to guess 100% correctly and not have to redo anything. As the saying goes, measure twice, cut once. Unfortunately you don’t know what your measurement needs to be until you get a buyer.

FCP will always shift media up/down the timeline when you do a speed change. Most people setup another sequence, do the speed change there then copy & paste the clip into their work timeline.

I think a couple of the reasons people are seeing a plethora of FCP users looking for help is because the number of FCP users is growing so there are an increasing number of “newbs” all running into the same problems. One of the great things about FCP is that it is inexpensive enough so almost anyone can afford it. One of the bad things about FCP is that it is inexpensive enough so that almost anyone can afford it. “Back in the day” (and I’m not that old, honest) you had to work your way up at a production or post house before you got to play w/the big toys and in the process of working your way up you learned the right way to do things, proper terminology, how to avoid common problems, etc.,. Thats becoming less and less true. While the dropping prices of tech have removed monetary barriers they have also removed a great learning opportunity.
Both systems are capable editors, IMO, but I wouldn’t switch to Avid and expect it to be a complete walk in the part. I’ve been thru things like the infamous “domain copyin” error (on 3 different gigs no less), bin corruption that spread through a multi-editor TV show like a virus, file-shuffling workarounds to keep the OMFI folders from getting too large, an Adrenaline bug that caused duplicate frames to randomly happen when laying back to tape, bins that refused to “unlock” (not a big deal, but just irritating), one gig where the graphic elements never properly translated from offline which meant we had to always cut them into the online by hand (adding about 10 man hours to the online per show), and other random quirks that can sometimes be solved by trashing the user, site, and project settings files (Avid version of FCP preference files).
As always, YMMV, but speaking in generalities I haven’t noticed a large difference in operational up time between Avid and FCP systems that are properly maintained and don’t have any malfunctioning hardware.
