As a follow up question, Does Photoshop have something akin to AE’s pen tool. Meaning is there a selection tool that has ability to make certain points with bezier paths and certain points with linear paths?

  • There is a number of things you can do…Simplest would be to use timeremap and freeze the frame…Another way would be to find whatever frame you need go to Save frame As, save it as a photoshop file then reimport it. If a frame is already preprocessed, then just import it as a stillstore, AE supports almost all formats.
    Hope this helps 🙂

Go to the TimeLine Window, select layer you are trying to manipulate, click the twirly(a triangle left of the layer name) this will bring transform properties, click on the transform twirly, this will open up different properties. Now select whatever property you are trying to animate. (Make sure you are at 0 seconds in timeline) The circle looking things that are next to the properties is how you animate, By default they are in global mode meaning the variable doesn’t change. Click on it and it will turn into a stopwatch. You have just set a key frame, adjust to whatever value you want to adjust. Next drag your timeline to the end of the animation, you can use mouse or the end key. Now adjust the value to whatever you want the out value to be. Important don’t click on the stopwatch again, this will make it a global property. Just adjust the value.
Here is some shortcuts: When in timeline select just the layer and press:
    s-solo’s scale value
    r-Rotation
    t-opacity
    p-position
    a-anchor point
Also buy a book if you can, once you learn the basics I would recommend Creating Motion Graphics with AE by Trish&Chris Meyer, it is a kick ass book. If you have money to burn checkout some Total Training Fundamental videos, they are very good but pricey 🙁
I hope that helps, Good Luck

In the view parameter select Rendered, and you should see the results. The Default is wireframe+forces, thats why you can’t see anything.

  • No it is not 3d, although I hope they change that in later versions. If it is remade as plugin for AE i don’t see why it wouldn’t allow to instance other layers. The advantage of PI lies in the fact that it is a full fledged particle generator…meaning you have an option of creating deflectors, blockers, forces and superemittors. I don’t have as much experience with Particular so i’m under assumption it lacks those options. Those “cheesy” effects that come a plenty with it are highly customizable. You can go a tweak them to your liking and produce your unique looking effects. Right now its downfall lies in being standalone app, which makes your workflow a lot slower because you first have to render out and then put out to AE. On plus side it renders incredibly fast…Another thing it is less expensive than Particular 200 bucks less.

Thx…I’ll try it out…So are you saying that you can’t render out a custom view at all? It looks fine on my RAM preview, is it different when you actually try to render it out?
