[Robin S. Kurz] “Just saying, since I know from experience that only extremely few X users even know the option exists or know how to use it.”
[Oliver Peters] “Or even care.”I agree to both.
Finally all available solutions on the Mac use the same underlying “hdutil” and add an interface to it, and some batch functions (like a second copy or verification)
Using a virgin OS installation you can use Disk Utility since decades.
I created a free app a decade ago to copy cam cards safely, make a checksum and create an .iso backup. Latter is nice to have cause to can write this backup to a card again which will be accepted by the camera. In several cases a camera can repair bad clips.
https://www.spherico.com/filmtools/copyCards/copyCards.dmgThe other option to work with movie clips at all is my VirtualCameraCard (free as well). It’s tailored for FCP X’s import options. Some times people got long clips from somewhere and only portions of the clips are needed (though these portions could be unknown). Working with managed files always the whole clip would be imported and the portions have to be figured out after import.
Creating a virtual card with these files allows to make selections already on import. You can use it to make a backup of the clips (similar to a camera archive) or just as a quick workaround for the missing options in FCP X’s import. Quick means that the virtual card also can use sym-links. Not recommended for long term projects.

October 6, 2014 at 7:00 am in reply to: Any pitfalls to making one’s own 4444 proxy media?Fred,
As Bill said, the workflow is totally correct.
I’ve have a beta of an app which does a kind of “source sensitive” proxy creation means alpa channel is preserved when needed. But you need Compressor to be installed.
Usage is easy. Open a library, the app scans it for original media and creates proxies for each project inside the library. Proxies will be scaled down 960 X size if needed. Still image size is always 50 % of original dimensions.I you are interested drop me an email: kiel{at}spherico dot com.

Hi Ilene,
Your approach is slightly wrong.
In the Effects Browser go Generators, select Shape, add that below the text. Select Square for the shape, scale the shape to fit the text. Add a Blur to that.
No real difference to FCP.– Andreas

You can do it the “Classic” way: Add a Shape, scale it to match the text and apply a blur to it.
You can download my X-Title Importer (https://www.spherico.com/filmtools/TitleExchange/XTI/XTI.dmg) and run the app once and quit.
On launch it will install some title templates.
One of those is TextUp Box. This will create a box behind the entered text which automatically matches the text. You can set color etc. and enter a blur.– Andreas

[Charlie Austin]… Kinda like FCP 7 vs X. 😉
That’s true. FCP 7 and QT 7 Player had a lot of automation options which are missing with FCP X and QT X Player. These options had been often unknown or hard to figure out.
To create an export droplet for QT7 took the same time or less compared to creating a Compressor droplet.
Beside some some other nice features there was a TC display in QT7 Player, and you were able to copy paste TCs – but those were the times where tracks were used, which nobody wants back 😉– Andreas

“A lot of folks are holding on to QT7 for these capabilities and don’t realize QTX is more powerful in this regard. You can trim, extract, save portions, etc.”
????
All of that you can do with QT7 and even more.– Andreas

Another thing you may check is to copy the card and rename the .lrv files to mp4.
This way you can get a preview and check whether these are spanned clips.– Andreas
