Hi Nick,
It depends on what you particular want for the subtitles.
One way (at least partially) is using markers as Bill described.
My X-Titles allows to import a XML and convert the marker text to time matching subtitles.
Since you are a TitleExchange user you get the app for free.

There might be several reasons.
One might be font corruption with the font you have selected.
Others might be changing settings in inspector without having any text selected in the viewer or the text field.See see “overlayed” screen shot.

FCP X always will create proxies which are half size dimensions of the source (x/2, y/2). The timeline settings are ignored.

If you haven’t done anything serious in the project use ClipExporter and import the resulting clips into a new event.

The error message means that there is a “bad” transition in the project.
