  • FCPX Timecode Generator for 29.97 fps drop frame?

Posted by Nancy Kiang on January 17, 2015 at 11:50 pm

Hi, I want to burn the timecode for my project for output to QuickTime so that an audio guy can see the timecode.

I shot in 29.97 fps and have been editing in drop frame.
I placed the Generator Timecode above my picture and stretched it from beginning to end of the project.

    1. The Generator timecode is producing non-drop frame timecode, so it’s getting off by 2 frames every minute compared to the Timeline timecode. How do I make the Generator produce drop-frame timcode?

    2. Is there a way to burn timecode below or above the picture and not on top of it?

    I am using FCPX 10.0.9.

[Nancy Kiang] “The Generator timecode is producing non-drop frame timecode, so it’s getting off by 2 frames every minute compared to the Timeline timecode. How do I make the Generator produce drop-frame timcode?”

I’m not seeing this behavior. I just tested this on one of my projects that uses drop-frame and the timecode generator shows exactly what my timeline shows.

[Nancy Kiang] “Is there a way to burn timecode below or above the picture and not on top of it?”

You can drag the timecode display to any position you want on the screen. Are you saying that you can’t move it?

[Nancy Kiang] “I am using FCPX 10.0.9.”

I’m using FCP X 10.1.4 so perhaps there is a bug in 10.0.9 that causes the timecode to not follow the projects drop-frame setting? Is there a reason you’re not using the latest 10.1.4? (other than you have to upgrade to using Libraries)
