Consolidate/Media Manage a bloated Library
I need to do what used to be called media managing (in 7) for a project in X. I am aware of library consolidation to gather all media into a project but I need to consolidate and eliminate media as per the following scenario:
I have over 1TB of footage that is mostly crap footage – cameras running between takes – nonsense takes – and endless garbage – of which I have selected about 1/3 to be potentially useful. In the LIBRARY I have an event folder for each numbered scene. Within each EVENT is all of the synced footage – the takes – clearly labeled. And in each separate TAKE I have marked the GOOD selects to use and then filtered down the field view using the browser to only see that. Now I want to consolidate only those selects into a brand new library without losing the folder structure or my sync. Some are multi cam clips as well. This will create a new smaller LIBRARY with all the brand new clips that are optimized media of only my selects with everything intact (and the garbage eliminated) for me to hand off to another person to work on just those specific elements. How do I do it?

Consolidate media will retain what’s actually in a Project timeline and skip clips that were ingested but not included in the timeline.
Unfortunately, it has no direct corollary to the way FCP≤7 trims unused portions of clips. If you use one frame of a very long clip in a timeline, the entire clip will be included in the new Library.

If you haven’t done anything serious in the project use ClipExporter and import the resulting clips into a new event.

I’ll take a look into clip exporter but that kind of sucks that there is no way to manage and elimanate unused media in X.

My guess is the world of FCPX playing back any kind of media in as real time as possible makes it difficult to implement a simple trimming media management tool. Things long long Gop, I frames B frames and P frames across different codecs make it not the easiest thing to just chop files. My 2nd guess is Apple just thinks a world of clips with handles isn’t necessary any more given the cheapness of storage space.
Having said that, neither of which are great excuses. The option should def be there.

Right. But the net effect of this is increasing an already bloated Library as the render files, and cache files and everything else that accumulates during the editing process add up. So even if you cut the libraries up into smaller pieces – like part 1- part 2 – part 3 – etc… you still end up with tons of junk media that wastes space and bogs down the drive and slows down the edit. I can tell already that the edit is slowing as I progress and I have to chalk it up to the excess of unused media as part of the issue. I know for a fact if I was able to simplify the project files things would go faster and be more efficient. I miss this aspect of 7’s Media Manager on projects like this.
I’m still testing Clip Exporter as an option but it seems that it doesn’t do synced files. And all my files are synced to an audio track.

Clip exporter can’t do it. I put in a feature request at Apple.

You do have the ability to prune unused (or all) render files – at he project level, event level, or for the entire library.

I’m aware and I use it. We are due for an update any time soon anyway. Hopefully they add this to their list.

I know this doesn’t directly address your “trim unused media” issue, but have you tried Final Cut Library Manager? https://www.arcticwhiteness.com/finalcutlibrarymanager/
