  • Textup subtitle plugin?

Posted by Ignacio Holiday on April 14, 2013 at 8:28 am

…So what I want to do is put a dark rectangular box behind my subtitles so you can see them better over the footage. From what I’ve read, it seems like you can only do that with a plugin. I downloaded textup, but I’m not really sure how to install it and there are no instructions that come with it. I just unzipped it and dragged it into my plugins folder, but it doesn’t seem to appear when I open up final cut. It’s an .fcfcc file.

Is anyone familiar with this program who knows how to get it to work? Or is there an easier way that I don’t know about to just do this without a plugin?

    Hi Ignacio,

As I’m the author of the plugin/generator I hopefully can answer your question(s).
TextUp is a generator that only works with FCP legacy.
With FCPX you need a Motion template to achieve this effect.
You can download my TitleExchange. Installing it will give you 8 free templates for subtitles, you will find them under Spherico in the titles browser — 4 of them do have the background box you want.
Even though there are 4 of these “box” templates they are finally 1 with several styles (plain, bold, oblique, bold-oblique). If you own Motion you can modify them for your personal needs.

But there are several other free Motion templates out there which will fulfill your needs.

    Hope that helps.

    P.S.
Once you have TitleExchange installed you may look at the options for handling subtitles with FCPX — these functions are free and can save you a lot of time. Just a quote I got from a user in Italy this morning “Your application is really great! It’s saving us months of copy&paste! Really!”

Okay, I installed your program and I’m trying to get the hang of it. I have Motion but I haven’t used it very much. All of my subtitles have been created in FCP already, I just want to add the background shape behind the text. Is there a tutorial on how to do this using your program?

Also, when I go to the Spherico tab under the titles browser in FCP your titles show up, but when I scroll over them I only get the red box with the exclamation point showing that they’re not available…

Some reason you can’t just put a blank box behind the title? Just pick a background generator and crop it.

fcpx version should be 10.0.6 or higher.
i will have a look at the templates to make them available for earlier versions of fcpx.

i don’t have a tutorial. but maybe i will do one.
but anyway — if you already do have all your subtitles in fcpx you are in a bad situation if there are a lot of them. fcpx is not subtitllers friend.
so the suggestion “Some reason you can’t just put a blank box behind the title? Just pick a background generator and crop it.” might be the only thing left for you.
otherwise if you don’t have special settings (per title) you can use use my xte to convert all your subtitles to a text file and my xti and a fcpxml template with a box (several around there) to reimport them.

Are there any plugins similar to your title themes but for older versions of Final Cut? Pulling in a background generator and cropping it for every subtitle I’ve created isn’t going to be worth it…

Try to open the .moti files in a text editor and change

Sorry, the XML parts didn’t made their way and aren’t displayed correctly.
But I think it’s clear what to change.
