    Try TKY Subtitler Effect:

I have just used it to create French subtitles on English interviews for a project in FCP X. You can change the font, font size, as well as the colour of the background box.

    [Gerry Fraiberg]“Try TKY Subtitler Effect”
As I said earlier, there are a lot of choices — Simon’s TKY Subtitler is a good one.
But regarding the OP — and that’s something I misunderstood with the first reading — he wants to replace existing subtitles with another template.
And that’s a completely different thing. So it doesn’t matter which title template you use when creating subtitles, it will matter which existent template you want to change to another one.

I would really just like a template that creates a box and grows with the text as you type it in so you don’t have to constantly re-size it. It seems like there has to be a plugin for this out there without having to buy new software.

This one is free. Text box grows as you type. You have the option of changing font, font colour and text box colour. But the default white text on a light gray box works quite well.

It is a free download. I’ve used it to create French subtitles over an English interview. Works like a charm.

Great, thanks. I downloaded and installed it but I’m still kind of new to Motion and I’m not sure how to use it to create subtitles. Is there any kind of tutorial on using it?

You don’t have to worry about Motion as it installs as a title in FCP X, showing up in your Titles browser. It’s simple to use. You can even copy your translated text from a document and paste it in. Any accents will be included. Just drag the title to the clip you want to subtitle on the Timeline. The controls mentioned below are located in the Inspector.

    Here are instructions from fcp.co

Instead of having to add, scale and position this box manually, this title effect does it all in one.

The subtitle sits comfortably in the safe title area, although it can also be racked up and down vertically as required.

You can choose the scale of the box in relation to the text, both horizontally and vertically.

You can also adjust the box colour (it defaults to a dark gray), as well as the box opacity if you want it semi-transparent.

And of course the main advantage is that the box will automatically scale as you add more text.

Unzip and copy the entire folder into your User/Movies/Motion Templates/Titles folder.

Okay, I’m trying to see if it’s showing up in my FCP titles or not. What’s the name of the title it’s located under?

    Go to
    https://www.spherico.com/filmtools/textUp/index.html

    and download the free version
    https://www.spherico.com/filmtools/textUp/TextUp2.zip

Unzip the file. Go to “/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Plugins/” and create a new folder “Spherico”.
Move the plugin into that folder.
Relaunch FCP. The Plugin will be found in the generator section under Spherico.
