August 14, 2009 at 8:40 am in reply to: Still photos rendering and outputting as black holes.Hi Stefan!
Whats the format of your stills?
.png .tiff .jepg .psd?
Is it some kind of CMYK?
Try to open a “balckhole image” in a photo editor or Prewiew and “save as” .jpgreimport the new file,
can you output it now?It could maby altso be a renderfile issue… Try deleting your renderfiles…?

Thank you Gary for this one!
Ive always thought that firewire was a “pure” copy – of whats on your tape.
with SD Iv tried the solutions: dvcpro50 captured firewire, and SDI to uncompressed 10bit. And Ive used the SDI workflow for a long time. pleased to see that I was “right”.
When it comes to my HD project the solution has been a plunge:
my boss has now payed for:
New mac pro 2x 3,2 quad
nvida 8800GT512
8gb ram
3x1tb seagateserver grade es2 sata 32mb 8,5ms
aja Kona Lhe hd/sd card
and I have an HD monitor – however it was no good until i have the hd card.Thank you guys for all your help and opinions!
Best regards

Thank You All!
For your great answers.Ill take one thing at the time.
Hi Sean,
“Bumping up DVCProHD footage to 4:4:4 is shoddy and unprofessional. There is no reason to do it unless you are trying to deceive someone.”
I’m not trying to deceive someone, iv told them that they wont get full resolution 444 if they chose me. however that’s the delivery format.Hi Bob, thank you for your thorough answer.
I have 4 machines on an xsan with blackmagic cards, so I was hoping to stay in the black magic path.
And one of the macs is a quad with pcie – so I’m now investigating if that can have a BM HD card…
As Tom says, there will be file delivery to a cinema setup. so 444 back to tape is unnecessary.
At the time I wondering if buying a new intel is the way to go.
Regardless: thanks for the Kona option.Hi Ben
I totally agree. however without any major HD projects coming in. I cannot “Major upgrade” right now.
This is more a package deal my boss gave away. And I have to figure out what path to follow into HD world.Thank you!
Best Regards

Hi Martha.
In compressor:
click your source media name, under “settings” – a bit to the right, there is “click the pop up to apply a setting”.
In the top of the list there is “advanced format conversions” – if you see your avi codec here; its great.
if not; you have to choose one of the settings, and go into the inspector on your chosen format and change “video settings” to your AVI codec.Hope this helps you out.
best regards

Hi John,
Thank you for your answer.
The reason I dint say what kind of G5 is that I have 4 different machine specs.
I just gave you the mutual specs…4:4:4 is my delivery format, so I recon its better to edit dvcpro HD and render it out to 444.
even though its not a quality improvement. But if I understand you right:
FCP 5.1.2 supports DVCPro HD through firewire. ???Do you have an HD kona / black magic card?
Best regards Andreas

Hi Marta,
Ill try to address both your issues in one operation.
In Final Cut – choose your sequence ->export as quicktime. do not change your settings – “use current settings”-> check “make movie self contained”. And off you go.Open compressor – take your new file and drag it into compressor.
– choose dvd settings 120min or whats best for you.
– under “advanced formats” your avi option is available.hope this helps you out.
good luckif this does not work: what are your formats on video, sequense, avi, fcp version, … ?

Hi Mariana,
How have you added the timecode? on a nested sequence? on a cropped slug?
Does it say timecode “reader” or “Generator” on your filter? All the best

Hi,
Are you working on a xsan? version?
If you are working on a shared storage with this problem the work flow should be something like this:
In the morning you copy your project folder to your desktop.
Open it and work from your desktop.
When you have created art and are going home for the evening:
Copy and overwrite the file back to the xsan where it came from.
And have an “Old Project files” folder on your desktop for the file that now lies on your desktop. This way everyone can overwrite your work – and you have BACKUP!
I’m told that the problem comes with xsan 1.3 – don’t now the reason – just found a work around that we use.
Cheers
