    Hi Jeff,

[Jeff York] “the keyboard mapping tool told me that F14 and F15 are reserved”
The keyboard mapping tool in FCP i guess?

Have you been here: apple symbol (the one on top left on your screen) -> System settings -> keyboard and mouse -> keyboard shorts.

Here you can unable whats ON in the OS.

(I’m on a Norwegian system so there might be a slight difference in terminology 😉

    Hi,

when not in print to video/edit to tape mode: are you able to view your video on your deck?
what is your media/ sequence settings?
Its possible you try to feed the deck with too much data, is your sequense prores HQ?

    take a look at:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11704090

not sure if this is your problem however hope it helps you out.

    good luck!

September 8, 2010 at 12:27 pm in reply to: Find independent clips in sequence

    Hi,

There is no “reveal independent” functionality as far as i know.
However if your different project media are located in different folders (in finder) you can use this to identify what clips came from what project.
If its ingested in same project, this won´t help you out:

Move your project A media to a new location, for instance a external Harddrive.
Copy your project file and make your sequence media offline. – (leave on disk)
reconnect to external HD ( where only project A media is located).

    Just an idea,
    Andreas

September 8, 2010 at 12:01 pm in reply to: Preparing still images for Final Cut Express 4

Ill try to help you step by step:
[Erica Rich] “keyframe motion to zoom in and out and pan around the images”
you can zoom and pan more on”big” images (: high resolution horisontaly and verticaly, with for instance 200 dpi) than a “small” image.
(small = your video material size)

Try working “natively” from scan to fcp.
Scan good quality, take it through Photoshop without messing with size or aspect.
If it works – you have a good starting point in FCP.
If this gives you too big files that fcp doesn´t handle – decrease file size until FCP handles it.

[Erica Rich] “While the images with motion look good in my canvas, the quality is terrible when viewed on an HDTV”
What is your “View” -> “video playback” settings? and your sequence settings? – do you have “RT” button on the left side of your sequence: what is your playback quality?

[Erica Rich] “that the dpi should be set at 72”
this is the dpi end result for a tv image.
Images used for zooming and scaling should have an higher dpi. And at least 4 times your video frame size.
1920×1080 video format you should have at least 7680×4320 (given its the same dpi)

[Erica Rich] “1. Is there a uniform pixel ratio that I should use for horizontal images (and reverse the width/height for vertical)?”
    ehm.. no…

Use whats native for you video material/ sequence settings I believe…
or you can adjust in FCP on your clips motion tab later.

[Erica Rich] “2. If the original images look better in FCE is there any harm in not adjusting the pixel ratio? (ie, can I trust my eye over technical specs?)”

trust your eyes… on a good monitor (or, what it will be displayed on)

[Erica Rich] “3. Does the actual size of the file in megabytes impact its quality in FCE or am I just to be concerned with pixel ratios?”

good quality (high dpi, big frame size, big bit depth) gives big file sizes. – however there isn’t any point in increasing file size to bigger than the native scan.

[Erica Rich] “4. Is TIFF indeed the right choice?”
FCP eats many still image formats. however do not save your stills as cmyc color space – choose for instance RGB.

    from: https://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/specs.html
“Still image importing for PSD, BMP, JPEG, PICT, PNG, SGI, TARGA, and TIFF formats”

[Erica Rich] “6. Should I be using filter?”
in photoshop or in Final Cut?
Use a filter if it does what you want it to 😉
on your clip in final cut you might turn on motion blur in your motion tab on your clip if you are moving it allot around. try different settings. you can also control motion settings in Sequence settings -> “video processing” and “render control”

[Erica Rich] “7. How should I set the output settings given that the final DVD will be viewed on an HDTV?”

haven’t quite got the specifics about your video material, sequence settings.
Are you making an SD dvd? or HD (blue-ray)?
I DVD – not compressor and dvdstudiopro? Are these at your disposal?

Hope this helps you on your way,
    Andreas

  • Thank you for your suggestion, however as far as i know – saving a project does not save the queued log files.
    This seems a bit odd…
    So saving does not help.

  • Hi,

Don´t know if it helps but you could try deleting your renderfiles.
Did this problem come after some time? If so; you could try deleting cache files, the waveform cache files, (found in Final Cut Pro Documents)
end if that doesn´t help, your prefs might be next to delete. (https://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm)

  • Thank you for your answer Art,
however I have some follow ups.

Good white paper you have wrote “using p2 with final cut pro” by the way!

[Arthur Aldrich] “This may not be the right vehicle for specific answers to your workflow, but I can speak in more general terms.”
Do you know about a better vehicle?

[Arthur Aldrich] “You will want to look at ShotPut Pro for offloading cards, not the Finder with Automator.”
I gave SPP a try. I tested it quite hard- and it wasn´t solid enough for me. I ran a copy of my card to cache a, made my router restart – causing the copy to fail.
and there where no log that showed this after restarting the program.
I cannot have to rely on a secure copy.
With Automator I have a “to archive” and “archived” folder besides each other. I let Automator move the “to archive” content to “archived” when transfer to Cache-A is finished. In addition I need to have the copy devided in two steps to the cacheA. First to the Cache HD, then move to the Vtape folder for automatic transfer to tape. Automator does this easy – SPP can´t.
But thank you for the recommendation.

[Arthur Aldrich] “You can edit AVC-Intra natively in ProRes, but not on PPC macs.”

Natively as read mxf with raylight/P2 flow, and have your timeline in proRes? or rewrap to ProRes quicktime using for instance L&T?

[Arthur Aldrich] “FC Server is good for making proxies, but you should find consultant to figure out your specific workflows.”
My nice Apple reseller tests this out for me.

    [Arthur Aldrich]
Archive the P2 volumes to Cache-A box. This can be done automatically with HD Log from Imagine Products, or maybe with FC Server. There is also a connector for the CAT DV database and the ProCache to track assets. Might be all you need in place of FC Server.”

I reckon I have to check out Imagine and CAT DV – and see how they behave with material back and forth to LTO tape.

    [Arthur Aldrich]
Also consider RayLight https://dvfilm.com/raylight/mac/index.htm instead of P2Flow if you want to take advantage of advanced organizational workflows with P2 metadata.

Read this article for more info on P2 workflows with Raylight.”

    Thank you!, I´ll read more.

Any thoughts regarding letting LTO tape be the only place mxf are stored in a online /offline Workflow? (flow 1)

Are there big media organization differences between read mxf native and rewrap as QT?
Anybody using LTO tape with workflow experiences?

    Thank You!

    Andreas

  • I have this same problem on a dell display.
However it isnt on the actual footage, just the preview.
try moving the footage to another mac/PC?

August 12, 2010 at 12:53 pm in reply to: Saving files in Photoshop for FCP

    Hi Aleksandra,

What are you going to do with the photoshop files in FCP?
you can import a psd file into fcp, if you have layers in the psd it turns out as video layers in a sequence in Fcp. Merge visible if you like it to pop up like a clip.

You can use tga or any other file you can save with an alpha.
Make sure you don’t use cmyc color space – Fcp don’t like it.
A nice rule is to have your stills 4x size of timeline. Handy if you zoom or resize in fcp.

When it comes to pixel aspect ratio:

    Good luck!

August 12, 2010 at 12:30 pm in reply to: Render & Save Problem

I now read your post again,
If you get that error when saving your project (?)
Try saving it on your desktop (where your privileges most likely are correct)
There might be a hidden file with the same name in the location you are saving.
Probably a filename ending with period?
If so – you can show hidden files and delete it, or just name the project something else.
Also check that your user has read/write the whole path where you are saving.

    Andreas
