ohyeah, that’s not a problem. I just realised I might have expressed myself wrong. You would have to use an expression, but in this case it would be a matter of just using the pickwhip. In particular the z position is a separate parameter so it’s all straight forward.

A bit late the reply.. sorry bout that..!

….what would we have done without Andrew Kramer..

Also look at his “ring” tutorial.

I think using a few write-on effects as a mask and parent the brush positions to the particle emitter should do the trick.

  • Sorry, don’t know no place for this, but I read about Maya Paint Effects (for After Effects) which does plants and stuff, if you can spare the dollars it costs..
    Good luck!

…if it’s the only effect you ever apply (!!) you’ve got Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E for the last effect applied.
I wonder, since you can customize the keyboard shortcuts maybe there’s a way you could make your own shortcut for Levels?

  • Hi..

But for Raylight to work you also have to install Matrox codecs which don’t seem to have been updated since 2002 and consequently won’t even unpack on a machine running vista.. or am I completely wrong here?

A bit of progress.. but the problem is still unsolved!

I just realised that my little boxes did not work.
In the PDF the link is created from the overlaying text not by the box. Seems like the attributes link only works when saving to web.

I have hear a PDF which has a clickable link on an image so I know it can be done.
If anyone knows how to do it, I’d love to hear it!

February 5, 2009 at 12:56 pm in reply to: Real Heart Monitor

I don’t think you could do anything in real time with After Effects since everything requires rendering.
Not quite sure what you want to do, but I assume you have the heart beats as audio (creating some kind of cardiogram), in which case you’d want to use the keyframe assistant to convert audio to keyframes.
(Once you have that I guess you’d need to use the “linear” expression to adjust the resulting values to the range you want to work within.)
That value you could either use with an expression as source text
for a text layer.. or (for a cardiogram) to change the y-position of the brush in the “write-on” effect whilst the x-position runs over time.

About that external document have a look at this tutorial, might be usefull!

Ohno, we’re on our own again!

Thanks a lot for all the help, it’s been invaluable!! And thanks to your help I now have my first showreel together, if you see it you might even recognise some of your tips!

I know you’ve made to good choices already, first one starting the tutorials, and the second one, giving it a break!
Good luck and much joy to all of you!

    Overcoming the Write-on 50pt limit?
A bit late to answer, but what I do when I want to reveal a too fat stroke is:
*Create a solid on top of the image I want to reveal, scale it up over 100% (that’s the trick..)
*apply write on to scaled up solid, turn down opacity to see the layer and then draw the mask I want the write-on to follow.. (copy mask shape to brush position)
*turn up opacity, change write-on to reveal and use as a track-matte for the underlying image.
