Yes, it depends on how you’re going to author the DVD and burn it. Personally I never cared much for Nero. I use 2 for authoring, DVDA-2 and DVD lab pro. If I’m going to use DVDA, then I render MPEG2 using the custom for DVDA. If I’m rendering for DVD Lab Pro, then I use MPEG 2 and create my M2V files.
Never just use the default. Check out jeditdv’s tips-and-tricks newsletter in the post above. It’s a wealth of great help and information. I wouldn’t be do Vegas if it hadn’t been for Ed and some of the others here.

If your not ripping a copyrighted, copy protected DVD a lot of us are using a newer program called Cinematize. It’s a life saver if a client sends you a DVD and you need to get the original back on the timeline to re-edit.
I tried the “change VOB to MPG” route but I didn’t care for the quality and it’s hard editing MPEG2

I agree with the above post. If the video is on DVD. If you have a VHS tape you’ll need an analog to digital converter. Most cameras will do it or get something like the Canopus ADVC100 and run your VHS player into it.
Cinematize has been a God-send for us editors.

Vegas will handle most of your audio needs. I have Sound Forge + Sony’s Noise reduction plug-in. Yea, expensive. For the few times you may need a seperate audio program, you can right click on the sound track and open it directly into Sound Forge. Don’t know if you can do it with Audition.
Sony’s noise removal program was a bear for me to learn. I’ve seen some videos on Audition and personally if I were going to buy one today, I’d probably look really close at Audition, because the noise removal is included……
But then I found out about an open source Audaccity

I wonder if your Real Player did something to your sound settings? That’s one reason I wouldn’t have that in my computer.
On another note, I use Total Recorder for a few things and I notice in my sound settings I got a choice to run sound through either my Total Recorder or my sound card. This really nesses up things sometimes when I forget and then I can’t use Quick Time because of those sound settings. Same as yoou describe with your Real Player and WMP.
It may be you got the same problem, running sound through Real Media and not your sound card?

This may be stupid, but you just got the new computer and installed everything? Did you happen to defrag before you started rendering?
Sounds wierd but long ago I got many error messages on rendering and it took a while before I figured out to defrag before rendering any kind of decent project. After that it went smoothly. I think someone here at the cow mentioned that to me.
I agree it may be another cause especially since I don’t use V6. Still using V5d and it works like a charm.

I would definately consider using one of the many buy-out music libraries. You will get the licenses you need then plus it’s legal.
Try Music to hues or Opus, but do a search on Buy-out music. Those are the 2 I use mostly plus I have Sonic Fire Smart Sound Pro.
You could tear out most of your hair trying to get all the permissions and licenses you’ll need on popular music.

No point or reason to render to AVI unless I could improve quality which probably won’t happen. You’re right.
I’m not planning to do any editing to these WMV files. There’s about 5 or 8 each only about 3 minutes long. Reason for bringing them into Vegas is to line them up the way I want them on the DVD and set chapter points which in reality I think I could do directly in DVDA-2. So now that I think of it, probably no reason to even bring them into Vegas. Don’t remember if I can set bitrates in DVDA. it’s been a while since I’ve used it that way.
I also use DVD Lab Pro but I’d need to render to m2v/m2a for that. I’ve got a lot more menu choices and possibilities in DVD Lab Pro.
