    Hi all,

Does anyone know of a really good DVD ripper that converts to avi or mpeg?? I have tried many however I have had no luck so far. I seem to have lots of trouble importing a dvd to Vegas even though I use the import feature. Vegas always craps out with a critical error eveytime I do it. I sometimes seem to get a few clips into the media bin but then Vegas won’t play back the file in the timeline?

I guess my main question is, what’s the best way to do capture and edit a dvd in Vegas?

    Thanks..

I found simply copying the files on to the drive, then changing the .vob extension to .mov, then throwing it on the timeline

    works for me

    🙂

I use dvdshrink to rip, when necessary, tho don’t know what gives best quality

While many people disagree with this, a way that works consistently is to connect your DVD player to a convertor and capture via firewire while playing the DVD into a standard DV-AVI file. DV-AVI is much easier to edit than MPEG2 and you don’t have to worry the other problems you’ve been experiencing.

If your not ripping a copyrighted, copy protected DVD a lot of us are using a newer program called Cinematize. It’s a life saver if a client sends you a DVD and you need to get the original back on the timeline to re-edit.

I tried the “change VOB to MPG” route but I didn’t care for the quality and it’s hard editing MPEG2

May I add I think I have found a nice new way to grab encrypted goodies.

FairMount to mount the DVD as a decrupted volume icon on the decktop.
DVDxDVPro to access the VOB files, which allows for in/out edit points, batch capturing, and a wide range of QT movie format options.

I’m working on a wedding video for my sister, and I have had a tough time getting a couple of goofy things off of our commercial DVDs. I tried using HandBrake, which works great if .mp4 will do. However, I wanted to avoid a 2nd level of batch recompression or long importing and the new method above seems to be a great method.

DVDxDVPro is a commercial program that would not read a commercial DVD alone, but with the FairMount decyption plug, I can now access DVDs other than my client projects DVD masters.

May I also say, there is a difference between ripping to the Apple Intermediate Codec and any of the DV/DVCPro/DVCPro50 formats. I get alot of alaising with the DVD codecs. I test rendered to a couple of uncompressed codecs, and the Apple Intemediate Codec appears as clean but much smaller in size.
