I know this isn’t the right forum for this but I thouht some of you geniuses might have some answers.

The audio went away on my computer!!! I still get system sounds and little messages like “Printing started” so I know that the speakers are still attached and functioning. I cannot get sound from a CD, web site or audio file stored on my computer. Win Media PLayer starts and shows that it is playing but no audio. When I watch a video on line – same thing – except that I can see the video just no audio! I did a system restore to the last time it was working (3 days ago) – same thing. I reinstalled the audio drivers -no good! I reinstalled Windows Media PLayer -still the same problem. Checked to make sure that audio was not muted and it wasn’t. Now this is just a relatively inexpensive box (HP) with sound on the MB. I can go ahead a buy a new sound card and install it – if that will solve the problem!! Any ideas first?

    Thanks

Since the system sounds are still working then it has to be something in the settings of either the sound card or software. Since you say that it stopped working on multiple programs, sounds to me like it must be sound card settings. You should have an icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen for audio settings. If not, look in control panel and open up the sound settings and see if you can find the problem there. Make sure the default playback device is pointing to your audio driver.

Well, I got it to work-I think.
First I found tghat if I played the files in Real Player, they would play. So I figured must be something wrong with WMP. Reinstalled WMP10 and it still would not work. Then installed WMP11 (beta) and low and behold I had sound agaiin. Cannot figure out what happened.

I wonder if your Real Player did something to your sound settings? That’s one reason I wouldn’t have that in my computer.

On another note, I use Total Recorder for a few things and I notice in my sound settings I got a choice to run sound through either my Total Recorder or my sound card. This really nesses up things sometimes when I forget and then I can’t use Quick Time because of those sound settings. Same as yoou describe with your Real Player and WMP.

It may be you got the same problem, running sound through Real Media and not your sound card?
