Vegas is not dependent on the video card so any good card will do. As far as your laptop is concerned I’d be very leary of a 4200rpm drive. Minimum I’d suggest would be the standard laptop HD at 5400 at least. That’s what my Toshiba had, and I had no problems with that and Vegas. My new MacBook Pro has a 7200rpm drive.As far as your desktop is concerned a 2nd internal HD would be great for your video files. You neer want to put your video and render files on your C drive. And as long as you’re not doing HD you should be fine IMHO. I edit SD with Vegas 8 Pro with an old off-the-shelf HP P4.

What kind of AVI files? How did you import them and from where?If they were already on your compuer, file-import-media. When you ‘imported’ them, they should have gone into the media bins. From there you drag them down to the timeline.
If it says media offline, then they didn’t get into Vegas, or you moved them.

Check the index. I’ve used this method and it does work cool but it take some time to get it right. You’ll need to start with a good script font.
Also there was a tutorial called 13 dots a while ago but I think you’ll need SwishMax for that one.

Try that Bézier Mask. You can do it directly in Vegas and it does work good.

….or you can do it automatically by turning on the ripple edit. Up on the tool bar it’s the icon with the 2 boxes and an arrow. Turn that on, then click the arrow for a drop down box of choices. 1 track – affected tracks or all tracks. Put your curser when you want to drop in the photos (or clip) and everything will move to the right automatically without you having to manually butt everything together again.One ceveat though, make sure you turn it off with you’re done or you’ll accidently be moving everything when you don’t want to. 😉

I would leave the program installed on your C drive. In the Options – Prefs you can change your rendering and storage drives. Vegas defaults to storing your rendered videos in My Docs. Change that to another drive and you’ll be fine.

Look at the bottom of the timeline to the left, next to the red circle. You’ll see a circular line with an arrow. Make sure that’s not pushed in. That’s the ‘looping’ feature that will loop whenever you have a selection made.
Like John says you may have a small area selected. Vegas will remember that when you shut it down and open it again, so you got to unselect it and clear the loop feature first.

As Mike says above, even though you’re using the camera as a pass-through device, you’re still doing an analog capture. It would be the same if you were using the Canopus/Grass Valley ADVC boxes.
You’ll need to turn off the automatic control and do it manualy.

Sorry but you got me stumped. Hopefully someone else can jump in here with some better ideas. I’ve never experienced the problem your explaining except when I didn’t set the nagivation correctly. but I don’t think I’ve had a project like the one your expaining.

How are you rendering now? What templates? If I’m rendering for DVDA, I use that template.
Go to FILE – RENDER AS – Mainconcept MPEG-2
Then under template check DVD Architect NTSC Video Stream (or PAL) if you’re working with SD.If you look at the info box at the bottom you’ll see Audio: None.

You can change the navigation of the buttons in DVDA over on the right side when you have a button selected. If someone else doesn’t jump in here, I’ll have to go look to explain exactly where it is.I believe from what you’re saying that you didn’t set there you wanted what button to point to.
