[Floh] “Have you defragmented your media drive?”

Is that really a good idea. Defraging a media drive on a Media 100 video drive can lose everything?

Just an FYI. I just learned recently that my Media 100 XS does not like XDCAM IMX 50. When I try to do a batch recapture it cannot do it with the PDW 1500. It cannot locate time-code. It does just fine with DVCAM footage on the XDCAM Disc. Weird.
I don’t know if the problem exists with the HD version or not. Something to look into.

“Super” for super-impose in the old days, “Downstream key”, “Font”, “Chyron”, “Title”, “Locator”. Take your pick. Almost depends on where you are from.

May 14, 2006 at 7:02 pm in reply to: Avid vs FCP

[tristan tumble] “anyway, this fcp vs. avid thing is old news, just edit something.”

I often check out other forums for editing beacuse I’m considering a new system. I’m on a media 100 844 and xs systems. Having said that- I’ve often wondered if other professions often argue over their tools like some video editors do. Better yet if carpenters, for example, are ever hired because of the brand of tools they use. When you have your kitchen remodeled do you ask what kind of table saw they use or do you hire them from samples of their work, referrals and service attributes? What is it about some editors that feel like they need reassurance that what tools they are using are the best?

It’s all in the reel. You can’t run from that.
    Just passing through.

[Bobby Mosaedi] “firewire HDV and 24p dont seem to be at the top of the list right now.”

HDV & 24p are not at the top of my list either. Although firewire for SW is and MXF would be nice. 24p is a fad and HDV is a tweener format. XDCAM HD makes HDV a short pit stop. We shoot 30p for the temporal, so-called “film look”. A.K.A. the look of film transferred to NTSC.

My cynical 2 cents, I feel better now.

[sformby] “If I heard correctly (and I WAS busy swilling their free wine), items still on the wish list and not in 11 (i.e, the packages above) – 24p timelines, MXF support, P2 support…”

    Add multicamera to the list.

Any word on MXF file compatibility? XDCAM is pretty popular around here and getting more and more popular.

April 5, 2006 at 1:21 pm in reply to: Is a cut a transition?

My two cents… A wipe or dissolve is considered a transition “effect” like a push or DVE move.
Down under I believe they refer to a cut as a “join”. In a cut or join you are in fact transitioning to another shot/angle. A transition is a feeling you give the viewer. How you as an editor accomplish this it is up to you and how experienced you are at effective transitions. I believe students should use only cuts for any project they do. It’s a great learning process to discuss where the cut should be and why. Sound, camera movement, frame action and composition in addition to gut feeling are all factors. A good cut feels good. I believe students need to stay away from effects as transitions to really learn what editing is all about. Tie their hands behind their backs and make them use cuts only! That’ll learn ’em.

    Anyway… back to work.

March 30, 2006 at 11:24 am in reply to: Media 100hd and Sony XD HDCam/Multi cam function

We just had a workshop here with XDCAM HD and Avid. XDCAM HD started shipping last week. I shot some video with the HD version. Overcranking/ Undercranking… 60 “frames” per second…Very nice. Orders are being received right now. Avid imports MXF files directly and I believe Avid is Quicktime based. The multicamera and color corection features on the Media Composer were very impressive also.
The Avid “imported” the SD MXF files directly but not the HD files “yet”. It’s drag and drop from the XDCAM disc to the bin. One clip at a time or several at a time. The XDCAM player shows up as a drive or a Sony camera. As an owner of 4 Media 100 systems I was a bit jealous. Media 100 HD will have to make some large leaps to keep me on board for HD. I can’t afford loyalty anymore it’s about workfolw.
