    Robb,

Many thanks for this helpful info. I need to fit 25-30 minutes on a disk and to have a simple menu with a single play command so that the program can be started by hitting “play” on the remote. I’ll be very curious to hear if these things are possible with a level of compression that makes the image look good.

Do you mean that you can author a HD DVD in DVDSP 4, then burn it to a regular DVD-R and play it on a set-top HD DVD player and see the video in HD (1080i, for instance)? How long a program will fit onto a regular DVD-R? Also, are there any HD DVD players that have a control port so that they can be synchronized?

One final question: when you bring in HDV via a video card, do the clips in the computer still reference the TC on the tape?

[Wayne Carey] “[Alfred Guzzetti] “When bringing HDV clips into FCP, would it be better to get a video card (Decklink makes one) that can accept an HDMI input? My Sony HVR-M25U has HDMI output. Would this produce a better result than bringing the clips in as analog component video?”

You could do this… But let me ask you this. Are you planning on doing more work like this? Or are you planning being and HDV shop only? This matters as to the answer. If you want to ban HDV only shop – then the HDMI card may be alright for you, but, if you really want to be a competitive post production house, you really need a capture card that is capablable converting anything.

Thanks for your answers. They’re really helpful!

I make documentary and experimental films that get shown in festivals, galleries, museums, colleges. They’re practically never broadcast. The places that show my stuff aren’t ever likely to have high-end VTRs like HDCAM decks. My guess is that the release media for these venues will be HD disks or HDV tape. Having an editing room that handles only HDV is OK.

So is HDMI a better way to bring clips into the computer than analogue component? And how does DVC100 do with fades? Do you see quantization banding in areas of mid-tone such as cloudy skies?

    Uli,

Thanks for this valuable information. It’s just what I wanted to know. Can it be that a future version of DVD Studio Pro will give the needed authoring tools?

Double click on the audio clip in the timeline and open the filter tab in the viewer, then add your filter. You can switch the filter on and off by checking its box in the filter tab. To hear the change you have to stop playback momentarily, but you can stop and start very quickly and hearing the change is easy.

For most sound editing exporting to SoundTrack isn’t necessary. You can do a huge amount of sound editing in FCP.

    Jerry,

Many thanks. I had already read your very helpful article, and that’s what led to my questions. I’m wondering what happens to a project edited as DVCPRO100. Will I be able to print it out as HDV or export it via future version of Compressor to make an HD DVD? Or will I have to buy a deck that records DVCPRO100 in order to make a master tape?
