  • Role of video cards in editing HDV

I’m trying to understand the role of video cards in HDV editing on FCP. I realize that these cards (Kona, Decklink, Matrox, etc.) will allow me to see the HDV image on a HD TV monitor as I work. But do any of them speed up editing in any way? For instance, do they eliminate the need for “conforming” (which I understand to be the time-consuming rewriting of the GOPs so that every clip begins with an I-frame) when outputting to an HDV tape? Do they speed up editing in any other way? I understand that they would allow me to bring HDV material into the computer via the component output of the deck and edit it in a format that doesn’t use mpeg2 compression; but is it true that such projects could not be output to HDV but would need another medium such as HDCAM–or might be exported to Blu-ray DVD once that arrives as an option on Macs?

Well, a Kona card will “accellerate” HDV I know… but possibly more important an LH series card would allow you to NOT capture as HDV but as DVCPRO100, keeping the resolution, and making editing feel just like DV pretty much… I’d suggest you read my article about working with HDV in the current issue of the COW magazine, availalbe for free after you register… just click on the link at the top of the forum…

    Jerry,

Many thanks. I had already read your very helpful article, and that’s what led to my questions. I’m wondering what happens to a project edited as DVCPRO100. Will I be able to print it out as HDV or export it via future version of Compressor to make an HD DVD? Or will I have to buy a deck that records DVCPRO100 in order to make a master tape?

You could record it back to HDV if you convert your final sequence with Compressor to HDV, then record the converted QT file to the camera.
