I’m using FCP 6.0 capturing clips in HDV from my Z1. At the camera break, a new clip is made but the new clip is captured starting with the first frame of the new shot. To deal with supposed TC breaks within shots, have you tried cloning the tapes and working from the clones?

    David,

Many thanks. The point I had missed was setting the deck’s i-Link to Down-Convert and choosing NTSC firewire in the FCP setup. Now it works. But I get a warning that I am capturing DF material to a NDF project. Is there a way to fix this? I tried setting my deck to NDF but that doesn’t work (I suspect the menu item refers to recording mode).

PS Media Manager works only on items you select in your project.

Doesn’t it work to copy the project using Media Manager and check the box that asks FCP to delete the unused media from the clips?

Many thanks for the advice, Rainer. It was very helpful

Let me pass along what I’ve learned in doing this. When I originally captured the down-converted HDV to my SD project, I didn’t understand the importance of the camera restarts. I just followed my sloppy habits setting in and out points. As a result, many of my clips include a bit of the previous and following camera takes. When I tried to recapture these clips in HDV, FCP broke them into separate clips wherever the camera restarted (and laid down an I-frame). I these cases, I got an error message saying that the clip cannot be connected to the media for an unknown reason, and I had to use TC to mark the clip and insert it into the timeline, copying the original filters and effects. Whenever my original SD clip included no camera breaks, I found that I could recapture without a problem and that the clip would pop into the timeline automatically, including whatever filters and effects were originally associated with it.

    Wayne,

Thank you for this valuable information. You saved me a lot of trouble. Too bad Apple doesn’t make this clearer.

    Wayne,

Thanks for this reference. Maybe I’m reading it wrong, but I understand that it says that you need to ADD memory in pairs of equal size from the same vendor rather than have ALL pairs of equal size from the same vendor. For instance, I assume that a 2.66 1GB Mac Pro comes with a 512MB pair and that I could add a 2GB pair to get a total of 5GB without any problem. Do I have this wrong?

Many thanks for all this very helpful advice. It bothers me a little to buy a computer, then throw away the RAM and replace it, but I hear what you’re saying.

    Luke,

This is very good news. Thank you. Can you comment on the second part of my question, which was about the quality of the down-converted image?
