  • Converting projects from SD to HD

I’ve been working for a long time on two projects shot in HDV and down-converted to SD for editing. I did it this way because until now I didn’t have the hardware or software to edit in HD. Now I want to move the projects over to HD in order to finish editing them. I’ll probably use DVC 100 for both but may use HDV for one (I need to do a test). My question is: What’s the simplest way to convert to HD? Should I copy my SD sequence into an HD sequence and recapture the clips? Will they fall into the correct places on the new timeline with the correct filters, etc.? Will I have to connect the recaptured clips manually?

Has anyone figured out the best way to do this? I’d be grateful for any advice.

    Hi Alfred,

first of all you have to make up a new sequence in 1080i or equivalent (HDV codec of the HDV files) codec. then you put the old sequence files in offline modus. The original files you put in a different folder on your HD. Copy the offline sequence in the new HD sequence. You have to throw away all render files of the old SD sequence. Now you reconnect the offline sequence with the original HDV files. All comes up as HDV sequence. You have to render the whole sequence again.

Many thanks for the advice, Rainer. It was very helpful

Let me pass along what I’ve learned in doing this. When I originally captured the down-converted HDV to my SD project, I didn’t understand the importance of the camera restarts. I just followed my sloppy habits setting in and out points. As a result, many of my clips include a bit of the previous and following camera takes. When I tried to recapture these clips in HDV, FCP broke them into separate clips wherever the camera restarted (and laid down an I-frame). I these cases, I got an error message saying that the clip cannot be connected to the media for an unknown reason, and I had to use TC to mark the clip and insert it into the timeline, copying the original filters and effects. Whenever my original SD clip included no camera breaks, I found that I could recapture without a problem and that the clip would pop into the timeline automatically, including whatever filters and effects were originally associated with it.
