i’m capturing my HDV tapes, and it’s mostly going smoothly, but FCP is putting in a few “automatic” breaks, making new clips, where i assume it must be thinking there is a TC break. upon capturing, it doesn’t stop and move slowly frame by frame trying to get set up again (like it does with HDCam tapes – shot on a 700 – on TC breaks), but it does leave about a 7 second gap, sometimes cutting off the first few words of the talent (yes, i know the golden rule is to ALWAYS roll 5-10 seconds before talent speaks…but we didn’t always do that.

are any of you seeing TC breaks in HDV tapes (shot on the Z1, esp.?) maybe this was where we turned the camera off and then back on between setups, thus causing a break, which is what happens with the 700, and this is without viewing nor re-cuing the tape while shooting. just power down, and power back up. or possibly sometimes just from turning it off and turning it back on.

    Mortimer,

This has been well documented since the very beginning of the HDV experience. If you go over to the HDV Forum and search back through the archives you will see two years of posts on this subject. I’m not certain if anyone has discovered the perfect solution yet???

thanks for the reply, and sorry for clogging up this forum with it. if HDV is this bad, why is it so popular? sure it’s cheaper, but with all these problems i’m just surprised it is getting around so much.

    Mortimer,

Don’t worry about the bandwidth, that’s why the Cow exists.

HDV is only popular because its a way to shoot HD on a DV budget. Its a love/hate relationship though for nearly every user. The results can be beautiful, but getting to the finish line is just as easy as most other formats. Once you figure it out I’m sure you’ll relize that its not all bad.

    mortimer,

Just curious what version of FCP you’re using. I had the same problem with Z1 tapes but was running 5.0 at the time. I thought I had read here that later versions lessoned the lost time when it starts new clips. Maybe that was a wishful dream.

If you have critical dialogue that you can’t capture that way, you could try getting it via component out instead of over firewire.

    Regards,
    David

I’m using FCP 6.0 capturing clips in HDV from my Z1. At the camera break, a new clip is made but the new clip is captured starting with the first frame of the new shot. To deal with supposed TC breaks within shots, have you tried cloning the tapes and working from the clones?
