i think the main advantage is several tens of thousands of $…

that and the fact that it opens it up to people who are happy living in mac world and don’t particularly want to venture into linux world with all of the technical idiosyncrasies that come with it

we have a san that can play 2 streams of uncompressed 2k footage simultaneously. what i really want is something that can play back dpx sequences in real time. we have a clipster that can do this, but its nightmare to actually use the timeline. final cut hates image sequences so i find it very annoying to use.

can premiere play back image sequences in real time or would i have to render some kind of avi / mov?

in fact i can’t even get it to import the dpx sequence, is this format supported?

also, if i configure the timeline to be uncompressed, should i select ‘desktop’? is it possible to have video monitoring in this mode?

the problem is that they are uncompressed and thus my (lame) computer is not capable of playing them back at real time.

i have a lot of rushes and need to be able to scrub them at will. mpeg2 is adequate for delivery so I thought it made sense to convert everything first to ease the pain of editing…

can anyone suggest a good workflow for getting a large number of tiff sequences into a format that editable on a computer without a raid array etc?

bear in mind that HDV is the same data rate as mini DV with effectively nearly 4 times the pixels… ie 4 times as compressed.
It’s a more modern compression so if you scale it down to SD it might be better than DV, but if you were to decide to work at HD it would be even worse.

also, HDV samples colour at 4:2:0 as opposed to 4:1:1, which in some cases could make it worse for keying (i think)
