Just a word of caution before anyone gets too excited about using Windows XP: no cigar with CS6 – Win7 64 only.
Oh, and I wouldn’t try to run Premiere Pro in any virtual machine just yet – even if it works, it’s not gonna be pretty performance-wise. Once nVidia gets their Kepler (virtualized GPU) thing going – then maybe, but it’ll take some time.

I saw that 24d offers a purely NAS functionality (e.g. TCP/IP over 10GbE) – are there any benchmarks on that, e.g. sustained bandwidth over a single 10GbE link, and aggregate throughput to multiple 1GbE clients?

I assume you have a RAID card? (Don’t think the standard edition of Mac OSX supports RAID5.)

On another thought: WD rates their enterprise drives’ AFR (annualized failure rates) at 0.8%, Hitachi – 0.4%.
Don’t know how reliable these manufacturer-supplied numbers are – as usually, numbers can be tweaked unless it’s a good independent test; so if anyone knows of one – please speak up.

Ultrastars (7K3000, 7K4000) are today’s only drives with 2m hrs MTBF, and the only 6G drives with a 5-year warranty. Plus, they are newer, faster, have larger capacities.
Larger capacities also mean higher number of errors per drive (not necessarily per bits read and written) which means redundancy becomes more important with higher capacity drives.

Games, 3D, certain other GPU-intensive apps benefit from extra RAM.
Yes, it may affect future upgrades – more memory is (almost) always better. If the price difference is less than $200, I’d certainly go for the 1GB version.

Not for MC purposes, and yes, they will both run MC – although I am not sure GPU acceleration will be enabled.
It appears that GPU acceleration in MC6/Sym6 is rather limited (compared to that in Premiere Pro) and having it (or not) doesn’t affect performance much.
