  • I wouldn’t expect app-specific benchmarks until it starts shipping.

Mac Pro’s limits of six phys cores, AMD-only GPUs and 32GB memory make it an unlikely competitor for a tricked out T7600 or Z820 series though. There’s not any secret sauce in the Mac Pro that’d make it faster than a similarly configured PC – and certainly not the one with more memory, faster CPUs, better suited GPUs (for Adobe CC).

    Thanks Bob,

    From what I hear:
    – certain codecs in QuickTime are broken and this is a huge problem for some
    – NFS is working for most people. “NFS here with no apparent issues. Speed and stability are both fine. However, we’re not using NFS Manager or automount but /etc/fstab instead” (this comes from the CIO of South Park Studios – I hope they forgive me for the attribution)
    – “Adobe CS 5.5 MS, Nuke, and Autodesk Maya 20[12-14] all seem fine with no obvious glitches in a generic CGI production workflow under 10.9” (this is again from South Park)
    – SMB2 can be quite problematic
    – SMB2: “using CIFS:// rather than SMB:// for mounts (which forces SMB 1)” works for some as a workaround
    – SMB2: fails with Synology
    – Smoke: possible problems, one incident of “Had to back out of Mavericks as Smoke didn’t like too much”

[Todd Kopriva] “The OpenGL features work fine on the Intel GPUs.”

    Got it, thanks Todd.

Mac Mini with its onboard Intel graphics is not compatible with GPU acceleration in AE, regretfully, and there isn’t much that can be done about it w/o changing the computer.

    Thanks Bob,

So for now, 10.9 is a no-no if you run either NFS or SMB2 or both?

October 24, 2013 at 11:36 pm in reply to: ADVC 110 Analogue Output Delay?

[Blake Carlile] “Hmm interesting thought, but would Grass Valley really do multiple conversions? Analogue In > Digital conversion > Analogue conversion > Analogue Out?”

Great point! Probably not. The converter is fairly expensive but not that expensive.

[Blake Carlile] “Does “E-to-E” stand for “End-to-End?””

Sorry: “electronic to electronic”. Many tape decks had “E-E” (mostly broadcast methink) buttons so that you could switch between inputs vs. read-after-record to compare quality, audio levels, etc. (See “Tape EE button” here.)

October 24, 2013 at 9:31 pm in reply to: ADVC 110 Analogue Output Delay?

[Blake Carlile] “There’s always a few frames of delay when a conversion happens Analogue > Digital, but Does anyone know if the RCA Anologue input to RCA Analogue output has any type of processing? “

I don’t know but it should given that it should preview the results of conversion (which is what introducing the delay), not E-to-E straight pass-through.

  • It’s actually strange that Kona 3 does it. Both Decklink 4K Extreme and Kona 3G list cross-conversion options as 720 to 1080 and back but not anything 4K. Seems that 4K can’t be downconverted on either, at least according to specs?

Don’t have an answer but curious if you tried the usual tricks: trash Pr settings, new project file (same sequences), fresh user ID on the same system.

Also, when you render parts individually, does the memory usage balloon like that as well?

Agreed, this is interesting and should work for the purpose.

The question is though whether Mavericks TCP/IP stack is well optimized to handle TB speeds. I think this is what DRW meant. AFAIK it’s not (well optimized) – one of the reasons companies like Small-Tree are in business with their 10GbE Mac-specific solutions.
